2021, Zipp, 454 NSW Carbon Tubular Disc Brake

If you have never ridden on tubulars and are wondering why companies even produce them anymore, then all we can say is you had better test out a pair of well-built tubs and find out for yourself. The Zipp 454 NSW Carbon Tubular Disc Brake wheels are a great place to start – right at the top!

With the advent of tubeless and the enduring popularity of clincher wheels, tubulars are definitely the outlier in the wheel world. The fact that Zipp produces these wheels in large part because their sponsored athletes demand it, goes to show that if you are out on your bike for hours at a time, and value great traction, control and ride quality, there are few tire systems that can compare to tubulars. And it’s a lucky thing that Zipp makes these wheels available to us normal cyclists since we can all feel and enjoy the difference, even if we are not among the select few who can hope to break an Everesting record, for instance.

Just one look at the 454 NSW will give you some hint about just how far outside the box Zipp engineers are willing to think in order to create a wheel that is truly aero and stable in all conceivable situations. Always looking for new ways to make their wheels faster and more stable, the Zipp engineers looked to how a humpback whale moves through the water, and recognized that the tubercles on its pectoral fins helped to make the whale’s movements faster and more fluid. Sure, we can scratch our heads and take their words for it, but as soon as we have the chance to float through our usual training rounds on these wheels, we have no choice but to become believers.

By combining the Sawtooth rim with Hyperfoil nodes and the new HexFin dimple pattern, the 454 NSW wheels simply slice through the air. The humpback effect enhances the crosswind stability, and creates an undulating 53/58mm rim depth, depending on what point of the hump you measure. When something simultaneously makes you more aero and less unstable in heavy crosswinds, it really must be considered a complete game changer in wheel fluid dynamics.

As disc brake specific wheels, they have been designed with the needs of disc brakes in mind, without having to worry about over-building along the traditional rim brake track. So the layup has been precisely specified to offer a stiff, responsive wheel without unnecessary added weight. Having no brake track also has the added benefit of allowing the Zipp engineers to extend the dimple effect all the way to the edge of the rim. You’ll notice the dimples actually differ from other Zipp wheels in that they are positioned more like arms of a windmill coming out from the interior all the way to the outside of the rim, thanks to the brake track not being necessary.

The 454 NSW wheels use the Cognition DB hub set that employs magnets to engage and disengage the ratchet mechanism. The Axial Clutch technology Zipp has developed reduces the drag of a traditional spring mechanism by disengaging the ratchet completely when coasting. Saving that energy loss due to friction will help you keep your speed up even as you are coasting, which will be a great relief especially on those long, difficult days over rolling terrain. The wheels are sold with XDR or SRAM/Shimano driver bodies, though if you roll with Campy, the Campagnolo driver body is sold separately.

The Zipp 454 NSW Carbon Tubular Disc Brake wheels will take you to another level of performance that top technical advancements make possible.
