2017, Enve , SES 7.8

As athletes, we are all usually pretty driven on our own; we don’t need a lot of coaxing to get out on our bikes. Then again, when you know you will be doing some hard sessions or perhaps facing your toughest race of the year, oh-how much easier it is to motivate yourself when you know you have a super-fast, surprisingly lightweight pair of wheels like the Enve SES 7.8 on your bike!

When you are going deep dish on the SES 7.8 level, you would normally assume that the high profile wheels might not be the best idea in overly gusty situations. But as it happens, in the case of the Enve SES 7.8, you wouldn’t have anything to worry about. These are aero wheels that remain stable and predictable even in heavy side winds that are frequently a fact of life for most of us, no matter where we live. What’s the point in having super deep dish aero wheels if you can’t take them out when it gets too windy!?

And that’s exactly the issue the engineers at Enve decided they would solve by applying their SES or Smart Enve System. SES means that they have designed the wheel with an optimized rim shaping to ensure a maximum of aerodynamic performance no matter the direction of the wind. So the SES 7.8 makes use of the asymmetric rim geometries in the front to back that have come to define the SES designs. That means the front rim is 71mm deep and 29mm wide while the rear rims is 80mm deep and 27.5 mm wide. The dissimilar rim geometries improve the efficiency of the airflow when taking into account how the frame and wheels interact in the air. Enve has made both front and back with an internal rim width of 19mm best paired with 25mm tires. The rim is also tubeless compatible in the clincher version, which will allow you to get all the benefits of a tubular with none of the gluing hassle. Of course, you can go full-on pro and get them in a tubular version as well.

Recognizing that not everyone wants to convert to disc brakes, Enve made certain to design the rim brake version of the SES 7.8 with their excellent textured carbon brake track. It works so well that you won’t have to worry about taking these out even if rain is in the forecast. And if you are planning on doing a fair bit on climbing, you won’t have to worry about over-heating the rims on the descents since Enve uses a special high-temp resin system which eliminates the heat build-up. Keep in mind to use the included specific ENVE Black Carbon Brake Pads.

Weighing as little as 1450g, depending on the hubs you choose, the Enve SES 7.8 wheels for rim brake racing or triathlon bikes have all the capabilities and qualities that serious cyclists look for in a set of aero wheels.
