2019 Wilier Cento1NDR Rim Brake
Since most of us don’t have ambitions to be pro racers, finding the right balance between comfort and performance can be difficult in an industry that primarily markets to the small minority of riders who can feel comfortable on a aggressive frame with a slammed stem. The Wilier Cento1NDR rim brake bike is meant to find that happy medium between overly aggressive and overly laid back geometry options.
Italian frame makes generally lean towards a more racy setup, but that doesn’t mean you have be uncomfortable reaching for your bars. In fact, Wilier’s NDR acronym stands for “endurance”, so they set out to design a bike that would work extremely well over long distances and rough road surfaces. They looked not only at the geometry, which offers a reasonably short reach and higher stack, but also to the ride of the bike and how well it absorbs road chatter. So they looked to the layup of the 60TON carbon fiber when forming the monocoque frame. Consequently, the frame handles every acceleration while protecting your touch points from those numbing and fatiguing vibrations and rattles.
To keep the Cento1NDR smoothly moving through the air, it gets the truncated Kamm tail shapes that offer a slippery leading edge, and eliminate the extended tail to improve weight savings while losing nothing of the effective airflow. The front end also offers huge benefits with the hourglass shape of the head tube giving an aero edge while the fork guarantees sharp handling with the aero fork legs. The rear triangle has also received some special attention. It has been designed to offer a degree of vibration dampening, though this version does not make use of the special rear dampening that the Cento10NDR uses, it will still be able to protect you from the constant buzz of the road up to your backside, and it will do so at a pretty good price point.
The setup will work with electric and mechanical groupsets. It is meant for people who want to take extensive rides over a variety of road surfaces. The frame is designed to accept flat mount disc brakes or direct mount brakes. In the rim brake setup, you can run up to 30mm tires, which will keep the road comfort level high without adding too much rotational weight with the rubber.
A bike like the Wilier Cento1NDR that can get you comfortably through a Saturday century ride and then jump into a crit race on Sunday will quickly charm you with how comfortable, snappy and well-priced it is. No one wants to own only one bike, but if you had to, this would be a pretty good, do-it-all option.
