2019 Wilier Cento10Pro Disc
Though Wilier has been making bicycles since 1906, it sometimes doesn’t get the sort of attention that it’s northern Italian neighbors like Pinarello and Colnago receive. Just one look at the Wilier Cento 10Pro Disc will convince you that that is a great oversight. This is an Italian beauty every bit as interesting and innovative as anything in the pro peloton.
As an updated version of the Cento10 Air, that has been ridden by pro conti teams in Europe the past couple seasons, this is an aero-oriented bike that will offer a mix of responsive stiffness and comfortable ride. Add into the equation the disc brakes, and this is an aero bike that will help you feel confident on every descent, no matter the weather and road conditions. Wilier’s designers have used much of the same NACA guidelines to create tube shapes that will be fast in all wind conditions. So you get the truncated Kamm tail shapes that offer a slippery leading edge, and eliminate the extended tail to improve weight savings while losing nothing of the effective airflow.
The front end integration also offers huge benefits with the hourglass shape of the head tube working with the special shape of the bearings to make sure all wiring remains inside the tubes and away from the wind, keeping the front looking very clean and aero. Wilier then has aero bars to complete the effect, and make it all extremely pro-worthy. That’s why guys from the Direct Energy team are riding the rim brake version of this bike to join in the Tour de France breakaways.
Of course, since this is the disc brake version, it is perhaps even better suited to us normal rider’s needs. For one, the frame and fork can take up to 30mm tires so that you can run comfy, durable rubber that will make the bike float well even over the roughest pavement. They have also made the intelligent choice to have 160mm rotors in the front, where the braking needs to be more effective, and then 140mm in the rear to save a little in the weight department. Industry standards currently for road bikes are skewing more towards 140 front and back, which is fine if you are worried about weight and don’t have a tone of descending to do. But if you are taking this bike to the big mountains, and especially if you are a larger rider, having that 160 up front will help give you a lot of confidence that you won’t have any overheating brakes to scare the shit out of you down a mountain pass.
This carbon monocoque frame manages to stay very light at around 990 grams in spite of its aero gravitas. Available in six sizes and five flash color combos, the Wilier Cento 10Pro Disc will be the type of bike to stand out from the usual Saturday ride crowd.
