2018 Time Alpe D'Huez 01

If you are like us, your knees go all wobbly when you see a really finely woven carbon frame. And when that carbon weave comes from the experts at Time, we definitely are going to stand up and take notice. The Time Alpe d’Huez 01 is the long awaited addition to the French brand’s storied line up. The lightest frame they have ever made, the Alpe d’Huez 01 will be more than a match when you want to climb its famous namesake.

At just 840g, the Alpe d’Huez 01 is according to Time 8.6% lighter than their previous lightest bike, the Izon, and they have been able to combine the low weight with a responsive stiffness and high level of comfort that will make you think there has been no need for compromise. For a climbing bike, lightweight goes almost without saying. But to get a frame this light and responsive while still keeping it comfortable enough to handle the sort of aged chip and seal roads you’ll encounter all over France, then you really understand just what a stroke of master frame building this bike is. They have the ability to weave the carbon fibers so precisely that they can dose out the weave exactly to the needs of certain areas of the frame, either for greater rigidity or to emphasize the compliance. They judge where to use their chosen fibers when weaving the Kevlar, Vectran and carbon to offer the ideal ride qualities. That means that the stiffness to weight ratio has been improved by 25% compared to the Izon, without demanding that you put up with some bone-shaking ride.

The monocoque front triangle is neatly lugged to the rear triangle with the BB386 press fit bottom bracket and direct link seat tube providing the backbone of the structure, making sure that all your pedal power reaches the road and doesn’t get lost somewhere in translation. The new no-set back seatpost has also been given a thinner diameter to allow for an extra level of vertical compliance, without compromising the rigidity. And once you get this baby moving, you will be able to rely on the Time Aktive Carbon fork to keep your handling pin-point precise. Not only that, but this is Time’s special fork that comes with a built in vibration dampers to soak up any road chatter that might want to reverberate up to your hands and arms. Long days in the saddle will feel less arduous and endless with this sort of integrated cushioning. Of course, you also have the option to order the frame with a standard Time fork. It would not have quite the level of vibration absorbing tech that the Aktiv offers, but a standard fork would save a bit on the weight, and will still offer crisp and responsive handling.

The Alpe d’Huez 01 has Time’s Racedrive Geometry that has lowered the head tube so you can get into an aggressive aero position. They also want to make sure you don’t need to compromise on front end stability by offering what they call Integrated Time Quickset which is a system with an independent mounting of the stem so you can adjust it without touching the headset. Keeping the front end feeling solid is rule number one for improving your confidence when descending, in particular.

The Alpe d’Huez 01 is a rim brake-specific bike, and offers internal cable routing for both mechanical and electric groupsets. Available in six sizes and three color schemes all of which emphasize the craftsmanship behind the carbon weave, this will be a bike that will impress you when it’s standing still, and even more so when you start to stamp on the pedals.
