2020 Pinarello Prince FX Disk
The Pinarello Prince FX Disk is a great addition to the Pinarello lineup because it will allow you to enter into the rarified world of elite Italian racing bikes without having to feel like you need to take out a second mortgage to do it. It is a top quality disc brake bike that you can get fully kitted out for a little less than a Dogma F12 Disk frame and fork will cost you.
We were super excited when Pinarello reintroduced the Prince to the collection, since the old aluminum Prince from the mid-2000s was one of our favorite bikes ever. It was an epiphany of what a bike that handles perfectly really feels like. Snappy on the climbs, stable on the descents, and sharp in the corners. It sounds so easy, but so many racing bikes out there hit maybe two out of the three, if you’re lucky. And this heir to that other Prince is so totally worth the name that it really feels like it’s ready to start the Tour de France. Since this is the FX version of the Prince, Pinarello has designed it to be for those riders who do want to push themselves, either in races or in other personal challenges.
Pinarello has used their T900 carbon with the a-symmetric layup that they have perfected over the years to ensure the FX will feel as snappy and responsive as possible without sacrificing a smooth ride even over rougher roads. The drivetrain side receives a sturdier layup than the non-drivetrain side to account for the greater forces exerted on the side with the drivetrain. And since the tubes use the Pinarello FlatBack profile, you will be able to enjoy the aero benefits without sacrificing the sort of weight compromise that often hampers aerodynamic frames.
The Prince traditionally slots in between the aggressive race ready Dogmas and the more relaxed GAN, but that doesn’t mean this is a bike that feels second best compared to the Dogma. It handles just as neatly, and weighs nearly as little. It just also costs a lot less, and does all this while still looking very elegant. It’s an all-around beauty that is ready for whatever type of road riding you have in mind. And since it has disc brakes, and has been designed to work with tires up to 28mm wide, you won’t have to turn around once your road unexpectedly turns to gravel.
If you remember the early Onda forks and seatstays with the exaggerated waves, then you’ll be wondering whether the new Ondas are related in name only, but that’s not really the case. True they are an evolution of the idea and work towards softening the ride without losing the rigidity that we need to keep the handling sharp. Consequently, the fork has a reverse wave of sorts and Pinarello has added what they call “fork flaps” which are essentially little fairings to the rear of the dropout to increase stiffness and enhance the aerodynamics of that problematic area. Taking into account the different forces that the frame material must withstand because of disc brakes, the relevant areas like the fork and rear triangle have received a special layup. It adds a minimum of weight and maximum of security.
Then design mainstays like the internal cable routing, Think2 System with E-Link for electronic groupsets, Italian thread bottom bracket and a wide range of size availability, keep the Pinarello Prince FX Disk well ahead of similar bikes in this class in terms of variety of choice and quality of construction.
