2017 Pinarello Dogma F8

Though there have been many iterations of the Pinarello Dogma, stretching back even to their experimentation with magnesium frames, it would be hard to imagine that any previous version has had the same level of love and care lavished on it and the Dogma F8. That’s largely because Pinarello’s designers joined forces with Team Sky and Jaguar to design a bike that had the same beloved geometry and handling as the previous Dogma 65.1, but with greater aerodynamic qualities and a lighter weight.

Pinarello has a longstanding relationship with Toray Industries who supply the Torayca T1100 1K with nano-alloy technology for the F8 frames. Incidentally, this is the same carbon used on the F10 as well, indicating just how advanced the build of the Dogma F8 is. Pinarello sticks with its exceptional asymmetric design for the carbon layup. It means that the regions that take the brunt of the pedaling forces, like the drivetrain side for instance, receive a layering of the Toray T1100 1K carbon fiber that will increase its ability to withstand the forces, while allowing for a reduction in material used in other regions. That helps keep the weight down without sacrificing stiffness or durability. Even things like the dropouts are carbon to help alleviate any chances of gaining weight. The tube shapes have also received a rethink since Pinarello and their partners at Jaguar were particularly intent on improving the aero qualities of the Dogma. If you were always a little sceptical about those curvy Onda forks on previous Pinarellos, you’ll be encouraged to see that the wind tunnel tested aero fork has been given a splayed shape to reduce the turbulent airflow around the wheels, while the curvy S-pattern has been somewhat flattened. With the down tube, seat tube, and seat stays all receiving an aero Kamm Tail design, or what Pinarello calls their Flat Back shaping, the frame not only looks like it spent a bit more time in the wind tunnel, but it is decidedly more aerodynamic than previous Dogmas with a claimed 47% improvement. Even something like the rear brake has been protected from causing drag by the monostay. The headtube has an even more pronounced bow-of-the-boat shape to give this leading edge an airflow advantage.

If you have a horror of the press fit BBs because of how fiddly they are to maintain or the likelihood of a squeak accompanying most your rides, then fear not since Pinarello uses an Italian threaded bottom bracket with the F8, which means you will also be free to choose from any number of crank options. The tapered 1 1/2 to 1 1/8 headset will increase strength and stability in steering. The frame fits up to 25mm tires, but you shouldn’t be worried about a rough ride since the engineers at Jaguar and Pinarello have made certain to give the frame a carbon layup that will absorb unwanted road chatter. They have also included two options for the positioning of the water bottle cage on the seat tube, since their wind tunnel testing revealed a lower position reduced drag. Keeping the lines clean and aero, all cable routing is internal, and the frame is compatible with all mechanical and electronic groupsets.

One of the especially lovely decisions Pinarello has made for the Dogma, is that they make it available in a whopping 13 different sizes. For a carbon monocoque frameset that is really quite special. It means that there is hardly a person in the world who could not find a Dogma F8 that would fit.
