2020 Pinarello Dogma F12 XLight



When it comes to bikes, we try not to play favorites. We love them all, really. But we have to admit that our heart flutters just a bit more strongly when we see a bike like the Pinarello Dogma F12 XLight. It might not seem all that revolutionary compared to the previous F10 XLight, but by golly they really are just refining the hell out of that design. Of course, we love it.

For a long time, Pinarello proclaimed that they were not trying to create the lightest bike, or the absolutely more aero bike, but rather just want to make the best all around bike. It kept the appearance of the frames pretty traditional too, until they threw caution to the wind and designed the F8. Big tubes, truncated Kamm tails, proprietary aero seatposts, they threw the fluid dynamic design book at it. Since then, the F10 and now the F12 have been taking that initial wind tunnel developed frame, and refined it. A little lighter here, a little more aero there. And now we can celebrate the Dogma F12 X-Light, which has to be about the best do-it-all road bike available these days.

Because, aside from the low weight, which in a size 53 is about 720 grams, and aside from the fact that they have reduce drag by 7.3% over the F10 X-Light, what has always set Pinarello apart from the competition is how comfortable the ride quality is. What’s harder to pinpoint is where exactly does the magic happen. Are the bikes so comfortable because they are using the highest quality carbon possible? Is it because they have wizards laying up the carbon, knowing exactly where to focus to improve stiffness without compromising compliancy? Is it the way the tubes have been shaped, with the evolution of the Onda fork and seat stay shapes? Of course it must be a combination of all these things.

Since the F12 was only just released a few weeks before this XLight version, we were admittedly waiting with baited breath hoping for its arrival. Shedding a good 100 grams from the already light F12, the F12 XLight makes use of Toracya T1100 UD Dream Carbon, which is lighter and stronger than the Toracya T1100 1K Dream Carbon. And it shares the same aero improvements that the regular F12 received. That means the TICR Total Internal Cable Routing, which works in conjunction with the Talon Ultra cockpit, to hide all cables from the wind. Integrating the cables and routing them through the bars and headset down to the brakes and gears improves not only the aerodynamics, but the functionality of the cable and the number of brake and gear combinations. And helpfully, the Most stem aero spacers come in two pieces so you can change your stack height without having to mess with all the internal cables.

As the rim brake version of this bike, it has been designed for direct mount brakes, which will appeal to anyone who likes the traditional look of a rim brake bike, but still wants to feel confident in the power of the braking force. It has also been designed to accept 28mm tires, which will also enhance the bike’s comfort and versatility.

Like the regular F12, the Pinarello Dogma F12 XLight comes in 13 sizes, from a 42cm all the way up to a 61. Having that many size options is just another great illustration of how much Pinarello wants to reach riders of all sizes and focuses. Having that many carbon mold options is a huge investment and a testament to the values of the company. Similarly, the Most cockpits are produced 16 bar sizes, so you won’t have to compromise on the stem length and bar width when you go with one of their Ultra cockpits.
