2018 Pinarello Dogma F10 X-Light
Lightweight, aero. Aero, lightweight. Both qualities have been catchwords in the industry for many years, acting as a talisman or a curse depending on which way you swung. Truth is each is equally important but often seem mutually exclusive. Can you really have an aero bike that doesn't compromise on weight? Well if you buy the Pinarello Dogma F10 X-Light you can.
You may have noticed by now that Pinarello has largely eschewed the typical strategy of having a separate aero bike and then a different lightweight bike in their line-up, preferring rather to have one top of the line bike that offers the perfectly balanced ride qualities. The F8 and now the F10 have ably filled that position the past several years. But those Dogmas were never particularly light, not by modern flyweight standards anyways. The F10 X-Light has remedied that. Using the same aero tube profiles as the F10, the X-Light uses a lighter Torayca T1100G UD carbon with a new carbon fiber lay-up that maintains the same level of stiffness and aero shapes while cutting down the frame weight. So now in a 53cm, the frame weighs around 760 grams while the fork is 340 grams. In addition to the new lay-up, Pinarello also uses a slower molding process to control the amount of required resin.
Other than that, all the same advancements found on the Dogma F10 are present here. The huge down tube has that same little indentation around where the water bottle cage will sit. The huge FlatBack tube shape increases aerodynamics for when the bottles are in the cages, and provides a little opening to aid the Think2 internal wiring. Additional aero effects are borrowed from the Pinarello time trial bike the Bolide like the shaping of the fork legs to improve the airflow at this important leading edge. The faring at the fork’s dropout is also there, smoothing the airflow. The crown of the fork has received a little aero lip at the back to smooth out the transition point between the fork and the downtube. The bottom bracket comes with Italian threading which makes it a pretty compatible frame for lots of cranks, and no worries about press fit squeaking. The internal cable routing accommodates both mechanical and electronic groupsets, which enhances the aero qualities of the frame. The Dogma seatpost with a TwinForce aero integrated seat collar will also help keep the air flowing smoothly past you.
Pinarello has set a rider weight limit of 85 kilograms or 187 pounds. That might seem a little unfair to larger riders out there, but this is a UCI approved frame that has been designed to be the last piece of the ultimate climber’s puzzle. Whether you are Chris Froome or a Cat 2 looking to move up, the Pinarello Dogma F10 X-Light will be a tempting prospect. This will be the perfect bike to have when testing yourself on Ventouxesque ascents. It is the best of the best.
