If you are considering buying a Pinarello Bolide TT bike, you are very serious about your time trialling. And you will be getting one of the slickest, most highly engineered TT bikes available.
The original Bolide started out fast, aero, and surprisingly light, all of which has been enhanced and improved on this most recent version. Using Torayca T1100 carbon fiber, Pinarello managed to refine the carbon layup to increase the rigidity of the frame while cutting as much as 350 grams from the overall weight. But using a lighter, stronger carbon is only half the battle. They also made the effort to focus on those areas that could be improved upon in terms of aerodynamics and utility. Starting at the leading edge, they designed the new fork’s dropouts to include an airfoil section as a way to improve the aerodynamics at that problematic drag-inducing cluster of material. The downtube has been given the distinctive concave flatback and section specifically designed to work well with a water bottle, which also is typically a place you’ll lose a few watts in drag. With an optimized airfoil section, the sloping top tube will also cut nicely through the wind while the Twin Force seatpost clamp will keep out of the way and hold your seatpost solidly in place waiting for the next serious acceleration. And among the neat little details includes a cover for the rear brake to clean up the air over the trailing edge.
Though you can go with either mechanical or electronic, the frame has been specifically optimized to work with electronic drivetrains with a hatch hidden in the downtube to store the battery, and will use Pinarello’s own integrated brakes. Another aero touch comes in the form of the integrated handlebars and stem. The bars are 40cm wide with aerobar extensions that can be straight or angled up at 23°. They can also be adjusted for width while the stem comes either in 100mm or 120mm depending on the frame size. So you can get your preferred fit pretty spot on, which is so important with a TT bike if you want to get all your power out. The integrated seatpost comes with the option of having no setback or -22mm setback. With the already aggressive geometry, you’ll definitely want to nail down which of the two will suit your flexibility.
Since it has been designed to send the Team Sky riders high into the overall classification of Grand Tours, the Bolide is UCI compliant, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t work equally well for triathlons or non-UCI related races. With its low weight and agile handling, the Pinarello Bolide will definitely be the type of TT bike that will give you the edge in those hillier races.
