2019 Passoni Nero XL
If you have been longingly eyeing the Passoni output, appreciating the skill and attention to detail, but just really wanting to buy a carbon bike, then the Passoni Nero XL will be the way you want to go. Passoni bikes do tend toward a more traditional profile in terms of materials and geometry, but the Nero XL is a full throttle racing machine.
Lightweight and responsive, this is a carbon frame made to offer that rigidity that will immediately translate into speed. It’s the perfect bike for the rider with a competitive spirit who has to win every sprint, even if your only competitor is yourself and the finish line is the town sign. As a hand-built bike, even though it is carbon, you can order either custom or from five off the peg sizes. Custom paint schemes are also available for an additional surcharge. This is possible because the Nero XL makes use of a tube to tube layup using T800 carbon that has been resined and printed in Italy.
Then, since Passoni are experts at working with titanium, they have used CNC machined grade 5 titanium on the bottom bracket shell and the dropouts. The resulting frame is seriously stiff and ready to race, but still quite comfortable considering how efficient the ride is. A lot of the credit goes to the impressive 50mm downtube forming the rigid spine while the rear triangle works to help absorb any road imperfections. And if you are keen to amplify the in-the-saddle acceleration, the Nero XL uses an integrated seatpost, though there is the option to get this with a traditional seatpost when requested. The Columbus Genius fork has been customized for Passoni and will be a big reason why the handling feels so stable and secure on those long, twisty descents we all dream about at night.
Of course, we should warn you that this is not a bike you want to buy if you want to stay discreetly in the bunch. This is a bike that will get tons of comments at the start of a group ride, and will likely make your buddies want to try that little bit harder to drop you. But that’s okay because it is such a beast of a climber, that you will more likely see your PRs dropping hardly without an extra effort. And what is so fantastic about this level of customization, even with carbon, you can start to decide whether you want your bottom bracket to be a CNC machined, BSA threaded BB, or you can specially request a Press Fit BB86. You can also request that the rear brake be internally routed if you want to keep the profile neat and clean looking. And there are a series of color and finish options from which to choose as well.
Once you decide to dive in and order a Passoni Nero XL, you will be joining an elite group of cycling enthusiasts who are devoted to a top quality ride with a highly aesthetic finish. But the elegance of the build will belie the ferocity of the performance.
