2017 Passoni Lightsteel
You don’t have to be overly keen on the history of cycling to get a big kick out of riding a finely crafted steel frame. Within the first mile of riding the Passoni Lightsteel, any images of Sean Kelly in a hairnet helmet will disappear because you will just be having such amazing fun riding this beautiful racing bike from Italy.
But don’t let its classic looks make you think that it is anything but an ideal road bike for weekend races and weeklong sportifs alike. The Lightsteel has been made from Columbus XCr tubing where the bottom bracket and dropouts have been CNC machined from stainless steel 316, which is particularly resistant to corroding and pitting. This means that you can enjoy the old style ride feel while being confident that this frame will have the durability to survive many seasons of serious riding. The tubes have been ovaled to offer greater rigidity when you want to stamp on the pedals, and the 68mm BSA threading for the bottom bracket will make certain that you can use a wide variety of cranks, and simplify BB maintenance. The head tube has also been made from the stainless steel 316 drawn seamless and has been given an integrated 1"1/8 headset which will combine with the customized for Passoni Columbus Tusk Straight fork to offer a solid feeling up front and direct handling.
Other areas that have received a nice dose of attention are things like the shell-shaped stainless steel dropouts that work with the replaceable derailleur hanger. The welded seat clamp is also a clever touch since it has been customized by Passoni so that you can have a welded clamp with a titanium screw of an aluminum clamp and a PMP carbon or titanium seatpost. That will match the polished steel option of the frame amazingly well, though you will also have the option of a eye catching neon green color choice, which will give a modern hint of how the neon steel frames from the 90s really popped in the sunlight. And if you are really keen to have the frame and parts really match well together, then there is a Passoni finishing kit available for an additional price where your stem, bars and water bottle cages will all coordinate with the frame.
When you make the decision to buy a steel frame, then you clearly have a vision of how you want your bike to ride and feel, and indeed, look. With the Passoni Lightsteel you can hit the jackpot since it is a bike with a classic pedigree and an understanding how a modern steel frame needs to perform whether you are looking to head out on a short coffee ride, or a race across America.
