2021 Parlee Z-Zero Disc
Just a few seasons ago you may never have considered buying your top of the line racing bike with disc brakes, but with the improvements in weight as well as aerodynamics, having disc brakes on a light climbing road bike seems to offer only advantages with none of the initial drawbacks. With the Parlee Z-Zero Disc you can customize and buy a superbike that will climb like a dream and offer the security of disc brake performance.
Since Parlee are experts at crafting lightweight, durable carbon frames, they know exactly how to turn their top line rim brake frame into a high performance disc brake bike without having to worry about it gaining weight. Riding disc brakes for the first time is not unlike the first time you fly business class: you never want to go back to flying economy. Once you know just how effective and secure disc brakes feel, you’ll never want to go back to rim brakes, especially when the frame feels just as light and easy to accelerate. In the process of laying up their frames, Parlee have perfected a joining method that is not really lugged and not really the tube to tube method used in monocoque production. They actually are taking bits from each method and then refining them. So they use the bladder molding process for the tubing in order to layer the tube according to individual customer’s ride requests, and then in the molding process the joints are fused into a united whole that they call a “monolithic structure”. This means you can enjoy the customizability of a lugged construction, and the lightweight rigidity of a monocoque.
As a result, the Z-Zero Disc can be either semi-customized, or fully customized for a surcharge, which means not only geometry can be personalized, but the actual layup as well. It can be precisely tailored both to your size and how you ride. It can be as rigid and light as your riding style requires. Using a minimum of material facilitates keeping the weight so low. Something else keeping everything light is how Parlee have squeezed out as much metal from the frame as possible. The dropouts are carbon, as are the bearing races in the head tube and bottom bracket. They say they have an almost invisible 20 grams worth of metal in the whole frame, but without compromising the durability of the build. The Press Fit 30 bottom bracket will also help keep the core of the bike responsive and make accelerating a snap. And with the added advantage of the disc brakes, you will be able to sport much wider tires. Now you can fit anything up to 32mm tires, which will even make this the type of bike you can comfortably take on hardpack gravel tracks if you are brave enough to do so. Parlee certainly envisions the Z-Zero Disc as being a great bike for a super fun gravel gran fondo.
What’s very nice if you are looking to put a seriously high-end build on this, the Z-Zero Disc is compatible with 12mm front and rear through axles and flat-mount calipers from Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo. The frame has been designed to accept internal electric cable routing, while the mechanical groupsets would need external cables. Aside from the custom sizing, for a surcharge, you can also get custom paint finishes.
The Parlee Z-Zero Disc will be the utilitarian’s superbike, the go everywhere, do everything, top-performing dream road bike.
