2019 Orbea Ordu OMP
Orbea completely overhauled the 2015 Ordu OMP and now we have the faster and lighter 2017 Ordu OMP which in the words of Orbea, will give you “the time of your life.” New this year are the FreeFlow fork, the mini taper head tube, the Mondragon tube shapes, and of course, the speed.
The idea behind the FreeFlow fork is that as air flows toward your bike, through and around your fork, this clashes with the air your bike is generating by turning the front wheel. This mix creates turbulence and drag and slows your bike down. The idea behind the FreeFlow fork is to widen the legs, reducing pressure and therefore turbulence and drag. It increases the speed of the bike by an astonishing 10% leading to a faster finishing time.
Until now there was a catch 22 in headtube design. A tapered headtube creates stiffness in the frame, but the increase in frontal area lessens the aerodynamics. A straight headtube has better aerodynamics but isn’t as stiff. Orbea’s solution is to have a mini tapered head tube. The top of the tube is 1” while the bottom is 1 1/8” So you have the best of both worlds, aerodynamics and stiffness. You have one fast bike.
Orbea is lucky enough to have the specialists at Mondragon University to help them innovate the very best in tube shapes for the Ordu OMP. They have made improvements to traditional airfoil design aimed at “helping riders go faster in conditions typically encountered on the road- faster at lower speeds and faster at higher yaw angles.” The intention is to have the fastest shape possible and in wind tunnel tests it has been confirmed that the Ordu OMP is significantly faster than before.
