If you are used to slaying yourself in Ironman-length triathlons, then you might be tempted to think that “Ordu” is short for “ordeal”, but you’ll find the Basque language much more forgiving since Ordu (we are reliably informed) translates into “moment”. That has a much more hopeful ring to it, and will be completely understandable once you jump on the Orbea Ordu OMP which is perfect both for time trials and triathlons.
Orbea has spent a lot of research energy into revamping the Ordu over the last few years, and what you will be getting is a frame, fork and components options that will slice through the wind while also offering reliable performance for the long haul. Using their knowledge of how best to work with carbon layering for their monocoque frame, the engineers at Orbea have also used the research team at the Mondragon University in the Basque country to help reshape and refine their tube shapes. They effectively have tweaked an airfoil design so that it would improve performance particularly at higher yaw angles. Cross winds can be the undoing of a bike frame or wheels that have been designed to work in headwinds. The Ordu has been shaped so that it will remain stable and aero even in the most aggressive side winds, like what you are apt to deal with in Hawaii.
To enhance performance for all yaw angles, the fork has also received a great deal of attention as well. Orbea has incorporated its Freeflow design which bows the fork legs out away from the rim and wheel. That smooths-out the airflow at the front of the bike, which in older designs would suffer from a lot of turbulence and drag with a narrower opening through which the wheel would rotate. It seems a small matter, but when you think about how important that frontal area is when trying to slice through the wind, it will definitely save you watts and seconds, and will have the added advantage of stabilizing the handling. Tapering off the middle of the headtube also makes a small but important improvement in aerodynamics. Reducing 10% of the material saves weight and enhances aerodynamics.
The Ordu OMP has been certified as UCI compliant, which means that you can use it for any sanctioned stage races you may be looking to rock, or you can enlist it to help you smash your next triathlon. Orbea has been careful to give is a multisport geometry which will allow you to fine-tune and refine your position according to the type of racing and training you intend to do on it. After all, you would probably want to have a slightly less extreme position for your Ironman length triathlon, but if your Wednesday evening time trial series length seldom extends beyond 20 or 30 miles, then you can ask more of your flexibility and really get as aero as humanly possible. Orbea has made this level of fit versatility possible by calculating a linear progression between sizes, and by designing a seatpost that offers an almost unlimited number of seat positions and adjustments.
With internal cable routing throughout, the Ordu is compatible with electric and mechanical groupsets.
