2020 Orbea Gain D20 20mph Bike

The Orbea Gain Road aluminum e-bike represents what can be achieved by designers who want to open up electric assistance opportunities for road cyclists without killing the cycling experience or negating the amount of exercise you can get.

Don’t think of this as a moped. Orbea calls this their Enough Power option. In a way, it lives up to that famous line from Lemond: it doesn’t get easier, you just go faster. And that’s the way it should be. The Gain has the effective design of putting the motor in the rear hub. That means that the battery can be completely hidden in the down tube with the C.A.N. recharging port just above the bottom bracket, ensuring this is a bike that looks like a real road bike. It also helps it remain pretty lightweight, much lighter than other e-bikes. A discreet button on the top tube represents the control center, where you can choose the amount of assistance you want to have: starting with none, moving into Eco, and then Boost. This iWoc system pairs with an app where you can customize just what amount of push you want from each setting.

And the X35 hub from ebikemotion will put out enough power to go 100km or 1500m of climbing at 20mph. Once you want to ride without the motor, you won’t have to worry about the motor dragging since the X35 system uses what Orbea calls a PAS Sensor that has the cassette lockring embedded with 20 magnets. The magnets are detected by a sensor in the dropout that communicates with the motor control unit, so it will know how much power to put out or to disengage completely. That means that hammerfests on the flats, you can roll at your own speed without the motor assistance, and limited weight penalty, and then once the hills kick up, you can engage the motor and keep the pace high. People might argue that this will give you an unfair advantage on group rides or that Strava segment KOMs will be delegitimized, but that’s not the idea at all. The motor for the Gain Road is just meant to help riders go further faster than they normally would. And without the stigma of an ugly motorized bike.

The aluminum frame of the Gain Road bike will offer reliable, durable performance that will make it an ideal long distance bike. And if you do like your rides to stretch for hours, Orbea also developed a range extender option that is an external device fitting neatly in the down tube bottle cage and connecting via the C.A.N. or Controller Area Network bus port that charges the bikes main internal battery. The capacity of the main battery is 248 W/h, which can then be raised by another 208 W/h using the extender. The main battery has also been made ANT+ compatible, so that you can make sure all your devices from your power meter to your ANT+ computer can talk to each other.

The geometry has been given a slightly more relaxed feel than the Avant, but will still be ready for you to get down in the drops to push the pace. Let’s face it, this is not a bike that will be something you can take to race in your local crits, so to have a comfort-focused geometry will hit the target for the type of riding you’ll likely want to do. Tons of tire clearance – up to 40mm tires – in addition to mounts for racks and mud guards will also mean that this is a bike that can be used for commuting and bikepacking.

The Orbea Gain Road e-bike will change your perceptions and increase your cycling pleasures. It is available in multiple complete bike specs and five sizes.
