2017 Orbea Avant M40 Bike
The endurance cyclist is a special kind of athlete. They need a special bike- so they can keep on going.
The Orbea website gets at the heart of endurance cycling with this description of their ideal rider for the Avant. “You knew when you planned the ride it would be a long day - a route stacked with grinding climbs and twisting descents, terrible roads with a good amount of who-knows-what-else thrown in. These rides aren’t most people’s idea of fun, but they sure are memorable, monumental, challenging. Is that why you keep going? You suck down another coffee and pull on your shoe covers to hold the weather at bay, it’s going to clear out and warm up in a few hours... Probably. Grab your Avant and do a quick check before rolling into the morning mist. No other machine could better help you endure the hours of rough, exhausting conditions ahead. It’s going to be a long day - and you love it.” Orbea
First is the OME (Orbea Monocoque Evolution) frame. They use high modulus and high strength fibers to put strength where you need it, and without adding extra weight. Polyurethane bladder molding with inserts is used for the bottom bracket and headtube. That means they can use less carbon and smooth out any wrinkles. So what you get is a frame that is light and strong, two things you need if you are going to be in the saddle all day.
The Avant also has what Orbea terms a Dynamic Structure. This means that there is natural flex in the bike. It is created by carbon layup. When you put that in conjunction with the minimal bulk of the seatstay and top tube you get a smooth ride- without an elastomer or any other mechanical addition to the frame. When you have been in the saddle since dawn, this is something you will appreciate.
The Avant has a special fork. It’s shallower and longer than most road bike forks which gives it the advantage of increased elasticity, tire clearance and torsional stiffness. It is just one more detail that makes the Avant stand out as a premium endurance bike.
One thing that separates racing bikes from endurance bikes is geometry. Endurance bikes are about long, challenging days in the saddle. Instead of prioritizing speed, endurance bikes prioritize comfort. To achieve this, every angle is studied and tweaks are continually made to the geometry. Always in the name of progress. Because more comfort means a longer ride.
The bottom line is the Avant is a feature packed bike that is designed to make your long hard days in the saddle enjoyable.
