2017 Moots Vamoots
If you are looking to buy a road bike that will last forever and be super fun every time you ride it, then the Moots Vamoots will be just what you need. The titanium frame has been made with loving care and expertise, so that you will feel comfortable and confident on it from the first moment.
This is a classic Moots-type of bike. They have given it an endurance-oriented geometry so that you can think of it as the perfect Gran Fondo companion, or just know that every ride from the one hour lunch ride to the Saturday century can be accomplished in relative comfort. And a lot of the credit will not only go to the geometry but to the material itself. Titanium is adored for the ride feel it can offer, especially when it is expertly managed by the people at Moots. They have chosen to use their most compliant tube set to offer an almost imperceptible cushioning in the ride, which combined with the geometry will guarantee a stable ride with predictable handling. But don’t think that means this is a wiggle machine. They avoid that by butting their tubes to keep the weight down and the stiffness up. The result is a bike that can accelerate on command while still helping you finish every ride feeling remarkably fresh. It’s that balanced of a bike to ride largely because Moots knows the most intimate details of how to work with their titanium frames.
Since the frame is designed for rim brakes, you can count on up to 28mm tire fitting, since the limiting factor is always the brake in just how wide you can go with tires. But this won’t be a big deal if you are really looking to keeping the weight down and planning on spending most of your time on paved roads. Especially if you are coming from skinnier tires like 25mm or even 22mm – does anyone even ride those anymore? – the 28mm will feel positively luxurious. And actually, on most rims these days, a 28mm tire is the best match in terms of aerodynamics. Any wider than that and you are likely taking a hit in the drag coefficient charts. Then again, that might not be that huge of an issue since the Vamoots is all about going big distances and enjoying the ride along the way.
There is no reason why you couldn’t use the Vamoots as your new roadie bikepacking bike. With that in mind you will have the option to add on an addition 1cm for the head tube length, as well as fender mounts, rack eyelets, and a third water-bottle mount. Internal brake routing is another extra you could plum for, as are S&S couplers if you have any ideas of traveling frequently with the Routt on an airplane or European bullet trains (where bike-sized cases are often not allowed).
The Moots Vamoots comes in nine stock sizes and of course you have the option to go for a fully custom sizing. This is a bike that will have you thinking of your next adventure to tackle.
