2019 Look 796 Monoblade RS
Even though the Look 796 Monoblade has been used in all the major stage races in Europe including the Tour de France, you are probably considering it as a way to up your triathlon game. And there is no doubt that the Monoblade can be a game changer for any committed triathlete. Since it is UCI legal, it can also be used as a time trial bike in any USA Cycling stage races around the country.
If you look head-on at the Look, you’ll see where they got the idea to call it the Monoblade. The sculpted head tube is almost impossibly thin at its narrowest point, pushing the boundary right up to the UCI limit of 25mm. This is a bike built to be seriously aero. They took their NACA airfoil tube shapes into the wind tunnel to test how slippery they could make it when integrating just about every moving part that goes to make up a bike. So the Aeroflatstem and Aeroflatbar work seamlessly together and flow into the top tube with hardly a blip. The design not only keeps it aero, but provides an increase in lateral rigidity for the cockpit which will keep the handling on-point. The wide range of adjustability is what lifts this bike above the “only for pros with a personal mechanic” realm and into an area where us normal folk can actually hope to get the fit that will make it fun. The stem is available in 85 and 100mm while the basebar can be flipped for a 25mm rise or drop. The extensions are available in an S-bend or straight option while the pads can be mounted up to 115mm above the stem with the help of spacers.
Similarly, the seatpost is semi integrated, but can be removed for travel, and is also extensively adjustable with two reversible saddle rail trays which will help the rider find the perfect position over the bottom bracket. And if you need to cut the length of the post, it will be cut from the removable post and not the frame itself, which will help avoid any disasters with the saw. There are also micro spacers that fit at the top of the post so even once you cut it into size, small adjustments can be made. And you don’t have to worry too much about a sore bum after long races since the Aeropost has an elastomer that dampens vibrations.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the integrated design is the ZED 3 Crankset. As a 100% carbon monobloc crankset, it is incredibly stiff and surprisingly adjustable. It uses a trilobed nut to adjust the crank lengths for a total range of 155-175mm. The crankset can take both 130 and 110 BCD chainrings, so you can swap for hilly courses, but its vast axle size means you can’t replace it with a power meter crankset.
Look’s Aerobrakes hidden in the fork, and then tucked away under the bottom bracket will also minimize and air disturbance at your leading or trailing edges. And the 100% internal cable routing will enhance the overall slick look and performance of the Look 796 Monoblade, and the Aeropost does have a place to fit the Di2 battery internally as well.
The Look 796 Monoblade is without doubt one of the most impressive pure speed machines available anywhere. It will make every ride, every race special just because you have the chance to wind it up and test yourself against the elements.
