2021 Look 795 Blade RS
Though many companies have segmented their road bikes into aero, climbing, and endurance categories, the LOOK 795 Blade RS has been developed by the innovative French brand to be as versatile as possible while still being seriously aero, light, and comfortable.
The biggest factor all cyclists are fighting against is drag. It plays a huge role in slowing us down. That’s why all manufacturers have spent years trying to create the most aero frames possible. But in all this aerodynamic-izing, lots of companies forgot to keep the bikes comfortable. The sleeker and stiffer a bike becomes, the harder it is to incorporate vibration dampening properties. That’s something LOOK has endeavored to solve with the 795 Blade RS. To ensure the aero advantage, LOOK started out designing the frame using Computational Fluid Dynamics software. They have been using this method for a long time, and so have the necessary experience to make the most of the results.
Since they have also always worked in carbon, and built their own factories, they have 30 years of experience working with the mercurial material. They know, maybe better than anyone, how to decide which type of carbon fiber should be used and where. And then how best to lay it up to give the frame the aero, stiffness, and comfort properties they want, and to keep it as light as possible. LOOK adroitly uses three different mix of carbon fibers: High Modulus, Intermediate Modulus, and High Resistance. The HM fibers are stiff and lightweight, but brittle, so must be used carefully, while the IM offer good resistance to force, and the HR can resist deformations and impacts better, making them a good choice for those places like the rear triangle where a certain amount of controlled deformation is desirable.
And what about that rear triangle? LOOK used what they call their 3S Design to optimize the traction offered by the rear triangle. Funnily enough, traction is not something commented on much in road cycling. As a keyword, you’ll find it used lots more in a mountain and gravel bike context. But the fact it is often overlooked when talking about road bikes doesn’t mean it isn’t just as important. Traction comes from the ability of the wheels to track the road surface as much as possible. The more your rubber loses contact with the ground, the more of your pedal power is wasted. That’s why LOOK’s 3S TECHNOLOGY is all about rear wheel traction. To improve it, they not only focus on using a layup and mix of carbons to enhance the vibration absorption, but they also made the seatstays curved and longer, and removed the bridge between the stays even for the rim bike version. If you’re wondering where the rear brake attaches, they have an eccentric little tail jutting out from the seat tube/seat post interface.
This rear triangle design not only improves traction and pedaling efficiency, but inevitably increases the comfort levels. In designing the 795 Blade RS, LOOK has also focused on the ergonomics of the touchpoints. The aero seatpost offers four offset options from 54 mm to -6 mm and seat tube angles from 71.8° to 78.4°. There are also six stem length options from 80mm to 130mm. The internal cable routing has been developed with integration and easy maintenance in mind. So your mechanic won’t hate you. And it is compatible with all mechanical and electronic groupsets.
The LOOK 795 Blade RS is the sort of road bike that will help you be faster without taking a toll on your skeletal comfort. It’s a pro level bike ready for racing days and Strava distance records. It is available in five sizes and three colors.
