2019 Look 785 Huez RS
To make a great climbing bike, you have to do more than just make it light. It has to ride well, descend well, respond to all your commands. The Look 785 Huez RS is the type of lightweight bike that not only is perfect for taking deep into the hills, but also for descending back to sea level and pounding out some long distance rides.
But to be a great climbing bike, keeping the weight down is an important component. The 785 Huez RS manages that easily with a size small weighing 790 grams paired with an exceptionally light 280 gram fork. They have managed these impressive numbers by looking at how they could shape the tubes to offer the precise ride qualities they’d like, which would then save weight and provide that all important stiffness to weight ratio. They were determined to make it a very efficient lightweight frame with the best possible ride characteristics. They consequently settled on a tube sidewall thickness of 0.6 mm to find that balance between performance and weight without forgetting about durability.
Once deciding on the tube shapes and thickness, then they looking into just what type of high quality carbon they would use. In the end, no fewer than five types of carbon where employed. That way each type of carbon could be used in this sophisticated layup according to where it would do the most good: rigidity, compliance, responsiveness. All these considerations and more went towards designing what is one of the nicest riding lightweight bikes on the market. Oversized tubing indicates just how quick this bike will be to react when you put in an attack on the steepest bit of a climb. The geometry will help get you into that aggressive position without making you feel you need to be overly flexible to make the most of it. And they have been careful to design a 27.2mm HR carbon seatpost to fit the bike because they feel it is the perfect diameter to get the flexibility your bum will appreciate while not sacrificing comfort.
The Look 785 Huez RS comes in four specific builds: SRAM Red e-Tap, Shimano Dura Ace, Shimano Ultegra Di2, and Shimano Ultegra mechanical. Since these are all super high quality options, all you’ll need to do is decide which system do you most prefer. But if you are indifferent, and really just want the lightest bike possible, with the e-Tap you’ll be getting a bike weighing just 5.9kg. Better not be planning on rolling up to any UCI sanctioned events on that bike; it’s well below the 6.8 kg weight limit still applied by cycling’s slow moving governing body.
