2016 Look 765 Ultegra Mavic Bike
Not every road bike has to be a racing bike. Sometimes roadies hurt their own cause by insisting on bending themselves into the most uncomfortable positions on a bike just because professional cycling seems to dictate 130mm slammed stems are de rigueur. Of course they’re not. Some of us aren’t comfortable like that, and if you’re not comfortable, you’re not going to ride your bike. The Look 765 represents the French company’s recognition that comfort on the bike can also translate into accumulated miles. This is their endurance offering and it is pretty special.
That almost goes without saying since just about every bike Look has ever released had something interesting if not absolutely ground breaking about it. In this case, we’re looking at a bike where certain important sections - the stays and fork - are made from two sheets of carbon with a sheet of flax fibers in between. Yes, a carbon and flax sandwich, though we should perhaps say croque monsieur, considering we’re in France. They have done this as a way to help absorb the road vibrations that build up, especially over the course of a long ride. You may not even notice it, but when a frame like the 765 does it well, you finish your rides much less fatigued and rattled.
Contributing to the endurance side of this bike, the geometry has been slackened, away from the aggressive race geo you’ll get with the 785 or 795, and more relaxed, making it much more comfortable for your to sit hours on your saddle. With a tall head tube and slacker head tube angle, you will be able to have a much more upright position while the reach will be reduced. This will make it much easier by not putting so much pressure on your back and hands, or requiring you to be excessively flexible. You’ll enjoy a stable ride that will be nicely smoothed out by things like the carbon-flax layup and thin seatstays. But you won’t have to worry about the ride being so soft that you can’t get any speed out of your effort since there will be plenty of stiffness offered by the oversized tubes and PressFit30 bottom bracket.
With internal cable routing, the Look 765 can accommodate either electric or mechanical setups. But it will be available here in a Shimano Ultegra build. And Ultegra is a perfect match for this frame since it offers top quality performance, long term durability, and comes in at a price point to keep it as comfortable on the books as it is on the road.
