Many of us wouldn’t have believed it even just a few short years ago, but disc brakes on road bikes has really become the wave not only of the future, but of the present. Whatever your opinion of the various marketing strategies that have gotten us to this place, the great result is that if you are in the market for a new racing bike, you invariably have the choice between a disc or rim brake version, as is the case with the Lightweight Urgestalt Disc. If you want to stick with your traditional rim brake setup, you can, but then again, if you want to go with something new and like the idea of the added safety and security in braking, then you can also shoot for the moon and get the Urgestalt in a disc brake version.
In terms of ride performance, you would be able to tell very little difference between the two if you were blindfolded and never needed to brake. That’s because the Urgestalt Disc offers the same incredibly responsive and well balanced ride that the rim braked version has. Part of the credit goes to the fact that Lightweight has managed to keep the weight of the disc brake version quite low, gaining barely 60 grams compared to the rim brake Urgestalt. But they still have managed to create a new structural design that will be able to withstand the different forces that disc brakes assert. The fork and the chainstays in particular have received some special attention, which means that if anything, the Urgestalt Disc has become even more comfortable, and the ultimate Gran Fondo machine.
As with the rim version, the Urgestalt Disc is sold as a frame only setup so Lightweight has taken care to keep it compatible with an number of component and accessory choices. It accommodates both electric and mechanical groupsets, and the internal cable routing means that you will be able to get it set up without ruining its sleek appearance and clean lines. The BB386 Evo press fit bottom bracket makes it possible for Lightweight to go really big with the bottom bracket shell, one of the reasons the frame feels so effortlessly responsive when you are putting down some power. Nevertheless, it remains compatible with tons of different crank manufacturers. Similarly, the 1 1/8” - 1 1/2” tapered steerer tube increases the stability and responsiveness up front. A Lightweight integrated headset is included with the frame, so you won’t have to worry about that when building up your ride. If you are considering a disc brake bike, you will probably be keen to wrap your wheels in pretty wide tires, so you will be pleased that you will be able to fit this frame with 28mm tires and get all the benefits of vibration absorbing comfort and low rolling resistance.
The frame has been made to work with flat mount disc brakes and the fork and rear stays come with 12mm through axles, which has become a sort of industry standard, however loosely that term generally is used. But again that means you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the right components to build up your dream bike. Even if you feel like you may need to learn a little German to buy a Lightweight Urgestalt, be assured that it will more than speak your language when you just want to get out on the bike and hammer the competition.
