2019 De Rosa Scandium
The De Rosa Scandium racing bike is the ultimate update to a frame material that really deserves to be better represented on the road. Back in the early 2000s there was quite a choice of materials for frames on the market. Carbon was just entering the fray, but you could certainly still find nice modern steel bikes, titanium, magnesium, aluminum and something called scandium, which is an alloy using both aluminum and scandium. And though carbon has become nearly ubiquitous and steel and titanium have special collectors, scandium has almost entirely disappear. And that is odd since it was always super lightweight, and offered a stiff though not bone-shaking ride, setting it apart as preferable to a straightforward alu frames of the day.
Keeping the ride reasonably plush without compromising on the stiffness of the frame is where scandium excels, making it a worthy alternative to carbon. And in De Rosa’s hands, their Scandium receives the type of expert welding treatment that will ensure the durability and longevity of the frame. The press fit 86 bottom bracket will give them the ability to size-up on the tubing which will make that rigidity all the more pronounced whenever you really stamp on the pedals out of the saddle.
Of course, as much as we rage on about the stiffness of a frame, probably the first and most important thing you’ll notice about any bike is how well it handles. How it feels under you and how comfortable you are on it will be the deciding factor for whether you like it or not. With a race-ready geometry, the De Rosa Scandium will be perfect to help you get into your aero tuck when attacking your competitors or group ride friends. Add the effect the De Rosa carbon fork and tapered steerer tube will have on keeping the front end stiff, and you will be able to enjoy the sharp handling that will help you feel free to maneuver through the pack during a tense criterium or fly down a descent.
When you are trying to decide how to build up this beauty, keep in mind that the Scandium can work with mechanical or electronic groupsets and will offer internal cable routing to keep everything looking sleek and modern. This is a rim brake dedicated bike and comes in eight sizes starting with a 45cm all the way up to 60. And if that is not enough, you can order the Scandium with custom geometry, so no matter where in the size spectrum you fall, you should be able to find a De Rosa Scandium that suits you. Lightweight and stiff, this is a bike that will keep you in the prize money at races while feeling comfortable enough for long weekend adventures.
