2020 De Rosa SK Pininfarina
Now more than ever there seems to be an endless number of excellent bike brands from which to choose, but if we’re talking classic Italian bikes, the holy trinity still has to be Pinarello-Colnago-DeRosa. Owning any one of these three brands gives you the visceral connection to old-style cycling that can be a huge pull for those of us looking for that special reason to go with one bike over another. With the DeRosa SK Pininfarina you can scratch that old world classic itch while still riding a frame that has been lavished with modern Italian design and techy solutions.
If you are a car enthusiast or appreciate the school of modern Italian design, it’s likely you are already familiar with the Pininfarina company. They are the gurus behind the iconic designs of things as varied as the Eurostar bullet train, the Forever Cambiano pencil, as well as numerous supercars from Alfa Romero, Ferrari, etc. For the SK, DeRosa joins forces with Pininfarina to whip together a wind tunnel tested aero frame that almost incongruously focuses on the comfort of your ride. They manage to find that lovely balance by layering different grades of carbon in a way that will give the ride a comfortable cushioning while not sacrificing the lateral rigidity for when you want to stomp on the pedals. A lot of the credit for the just-stiff-enough ride goes to the BB386 bottom bracket and how the downtube, seat tube and chain stays form a carbon cluster of big tubes shaped to work with your power output without allowing too much reverberation from the road to reach your backside. The tapered 1 1/8” - 1 1/4” steerer tube will add to the comfort levels upfront and keep the handling rock solid accurate.
Aerodynamic touches like the hour-glass shape to the head tube, the seat tube fairing, and the Kamm tail downtube turn the SK Pininfarina into an elegantly designed aero racer. The internal cable routing, which can accommodate mechanical or electronic groupsets, adds to the aero profile of the frame and keeps it all looking very slick. The seatpost, which is included with the frame, has also received the same aero treatment of the seat tube, and will help you feel comfortable even when you’re looking to power over a climb in the big ring. Though this is the rim brake version of the SK Pininfarina, it is also offered here in a disc brake set-up. Since it is available in eight sizes and five color combos, you should be able to find exactly the right look and feel for your days on the open road.
The DeRosa SK Pininfarina is a beautiful bike that mixes aerodynamic performance with all-day comfort. It’s just crying out for a fantastic build-up with some lightweight deep dish wheels to keep you slicing through the wind, and having some amazing rides.
