2020 De Rosa Protos

For a while there it seemed like De Rosa had sort of fallen off everyone’s radar, without a sponsored top level team to tout their latest creations. But that certainly doesn’t mean they were resting on their steel laurels. Among their boldest recent developments is the De Rosa Protos which is a carbon racer in the purest sense.

Made from a mix of super high quality carbons, in particular T800, T1000 and XN600, the Protos is a chunky seriously stiff frame that still manages to be lightweight and comfortable. It’s a bike that is meant to thrash the competition in a World Tour race but still be comfortable and practical enough to appeal to the hobby cyclist who wants to focus more on enjoying a few Gran Fondos in a season. De Rosa makes so many gorgeous bikes that it is easy to see that they really do want to have a perfect bike for every cyclist, and the Protos is for those riders who are serious about performance, but still focus mainly on having fun.

It is the bike you will find their sponsored teams riding, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be too highbrow for the enthusiastic amateur. On the contrary. The stiffness certainly is there to make it a high performer in race situations. Just one look at the huge down tube will tip you off that this is a burly beast. In fact all the front triangle tubes are oversized to offer maximum stiffness, using their special mix of carbons to get the desired ride quality in all the right places. So they can make it laterally stiff to enhance each pedal stroke, while weaving in some vertically compliant carbon to provide the day-long comfort. In addition to that, the Protos includes a harmonic damping system in the rear to tame rutted roads. The chainstays and seatstays have a wide-narrow pattern that enhances comfort and drivetrain efficiency. All this makes for an unexpectedly smooth, comfortable ride.

And it’s all quite light. They have cleaned up the internals of the carbon, essentially butting it so that all unnecessary material is removed. That helps reduce the weight, keeping the frame to about 900 grams in a medium size, and ensure that the ride characteristics are exactly what the designers intended. They have wisely stuck with an Italian threaded bottom bracket, keeping things easy to maintain and accessible to a wide variety of cranks.

Available in a generous eight sizes with a number of paint options, from the understated to the flashy, there most certainly is a De Rosa Protos to suit your preferences and ambitions. It is a superbike designed to be comfortable on evening rides with the kids and astounding when you jump into competition at a local timed hill climb.
