2019 De Rosa Idol
Buying a bike can be a tough process of sifting through all the marketing speak to get to the core of what you really want and which bike will offer that. Do you want a comfortable carbon bike that will be perfect for your Gran Fondo adventures or double centuries, but still snappy enough to put the hurt on at the front of your weekly hammerfest? Then the De Rosa Idol will likely be an ideal option.
Made from a strategic mix of high quality T800 and T100 carbon, the Idol has been given the sort of lightweight qualities that will make it a breeze to get up the big hills, while offering a classic geometry that is designed to work well for a variety of types of rides. Though De Rosa do envision it as a perfect bike for the long version of a Gran Fondo, that doesn’t mean the handling is wishy-washy. It offers great balance that will help the frame absorb the rougher roads as well as give you the confidence to attack the descents. You’ll be able to make the most of your flexibility without being required to put an ache deep in your lower back.
Staying in control is what this is all about. That is one reason why the Idol is available in a rim brake and a disc brake version. Both have the same geometry and offer equivalent ride qualities, though of course certain things must be taken into account to make the frame disc brake ready, like reinforcing certain areas to be able to withstand the different forces disc brakes work on a frame. But De Rosa knows that a lot of riders who are looking to compete in mass start events of longer distances, are going to need to have a bike that can cope with all weather conditions, and including disc brakes among the build options is a natural result from that desire to give the customers what they want. Of course, if you have a pair of nice rim brake wheels at home that you are looking to pair with a sweet carbon frame like this, that is always an option too.
With the Press Fit BB386 bottom bracket, the Idol offers a super stiff center for the frame which can be matched with just about every top crank manufacturer's options. It forms the perfect junction for the Idol’s sculpted asymmetrical chainstays and beefy down tube, while the bowed top tube and lean seatstays will help keep the ride feel cushioned and light.
The De Rosa Idol is classic Italian without being overtly flashy. You’ll get looks at your Saturday morning ride, but they’ll be admiring your good taste and restraint rather than planning ways to rip your legs off during the course of the ride. Like a friendly well-behaved dog, the Idol will help you make friends and, most importantly, enjoy your day out.
