2017 De Rosa Age
Don’t think that by calling this bike gé, De Rosa is implying this is out of date, old hat, or passé. Just one look at it, and you’ll agree that they would have done better to call it Élégant, if they want to stick with the French spelling, or Elegante to be properly Italian. But the De Rosa gé is certainly a properly elegant Italian steel frame that will appeal to the purists while also offering the type of performance that anyone who has grown up riding only carbon bikes will appreciate.
Now, if you have been raised on carbon frames and are wondering why anyone would want to get a steel rig these days, just think: comfort. Comfort plus performance. Of course, that’s what all frames are trying to give in various degrees. And though it is easy to think of these things as if they were on some sliding scale where once you move the cursor more to the side of comfort, the performance side is reduced, that is not at all what we are dealing with here. Just look at the way the frame has been made. It’s the highest quality steel worked by master frame builders. That’s clear because they are using fillet brazing to unite the tubes, and fillet brazing is one of the hardest skills to acquire in the art of frame building. You save the weight of requiring lugs, and avoid distorting the tubes due to the relatively lower construction temperatures that are required.
Of course, how beautiful it looks will make it a pleasure to keep in your front hallway or even in the living room, but how well it rides is really where you will feel very clever that you have bought it. Lightweight and responsive, it will absorb nasty road chatter while still reacting to all your accelerations. The 70mm Italian threaded bottom bracket will ably provide the center point to ensure the efficiency of all your pedal strokes. This is a racing frame for the ages. The geometry finds that classic balance between race ready and Gran Fondo comfy. Do you have a hankering to sign up for a Strade Bianche steel and wool event? This is the perfect bike that will give you the motivation and the opportunity to work your way up the results list. And since it is steel and among De Rosa’s Black Label offerings, the gé can also be offered in customized sizes as well.
With external cable routing that will accommodate mechanical groupsets, the gé will still very much look the part, too. This is the sort of rig that Eddy Merckx used to become the greatest cyclist in history, so you wouldn’t want to sex it up too much with modern tech. It will ride beautifully, respond to your every maneuver and look amazing all at the same time. Just because we can honestly say that well made steel frames ride like nothing else, doesn’t mean we are biased in any way. But if you do spring for a De Rosa gé, you will get the ultimate pleasure of riding an expertly made steel frame while not having to sacrifice your Strava times.
