2017 Colnago K.Zero
Buying a time trial bike is a big commitment considering the limited number of uses it likely has in your daily life. But if you are a keen triathlete or want to improve your chances of winning those week long races that culminate in an individual time trial, then adding the Colnago K-Zero to your collection will certainly give you that leg up on the competition.
There are lots of tri bikes out there, so why should you be considering the K-Zero? Because it is a Colnago, which means that you will get the same comfort and ride feel that you expect from a Colnago. The thought of sitting for a few hours in a time trial tuck is enough to make most of us wince a little, and Colnago understands that if you are uncomfortable, your power and resulting performance will suffer. So though they have optimized the frame for aerodynamics, they haven’t thrown the baby out with the bath water, which means you can count on this not only looking like a Colnago, but riding like one too. The frame offers a responsive kick for when you need to launch yourself, but has the rear stiffness and geometry to help you hold your speed once you settle into your race tuck.
Of course, as with any bike in this category, aerodynamics has been a focus. The developers at Colnago had a look at all those most important points of the bike regarding aerodynamics: the leading edge of the handlebar/stem interface, the brakes and the overall shape of the tubing. And since this is a bike used by professional cyclists, the Italian company had to keep an eye on the UCI regulations.
For the handlebar/stem setup, Colnago has developed one integrated unit to keep all transition points smooth and increase the rigidity of the region. The extensions and pads can then be adjusted to accommodate different reach and height requirements, but the base bar will not move. To say that a bike brand has given a TT bike aero tubing is a bit of a no-brainer. But in this case, Colnago has not just looked at the optimal shape for individual tubes, but rather has considered them in relation to how they will interact with the most aero efficiency regarding the other tubes and components around them. They were particularly careful about looking at how the shapes interacted with the tubes around them, and designing the frame as a complete system. Using the NACA tube profiles as a starting point, they modified some profiles while sticking within the UCI regulations. So things like the handlebar and stem seamlessly melt into the top tube to keep that important area as aero as possible. Similarly, all the cabling has been integrated in the bars and internally routed to keep the look clean not only to the eye, but to the wind as well.
Colnago lives by the motto that it’s the small details that add up to big differences, so they have also been careful to integrate the brakes fully into the fork and frame. The front brake caliper sits behind the aero fork while the rear brakes have been neatly hidden under an aero cover by the bottom bracket region, so that both brakes are completely removed from any area where they could increase drag. Another small detail that helps with the aero qualities is how Colnago has designed the seatpost and how its fastening point. The bespoke aero post is tightened via a bolt that faces forward but is tucked into its own little aero recess so you can reach it easily.
The Colnago K-Zero offers the comfortable confidence that will inspire you to tackle the more difficult races of the season and help you get your times competitive for Kona.
