2021 Colnago Concept

Just because Colnago has not been sponsoring any WorldTour teams for the past few seasons doesn’t mean they weren’t still designing and making some pretty amazing bikes. And now they have returned to the top ranks of the pro peloton with a bang, they have also proved with the Colnago Concept bike that they were doing anything but resting on their laurels.

One reason we all love Colnago is that it is so classic looking, but in the case of the Concept, the traditional tangos with the cutting edge. Though they have incorporated aero features to previous bike designs, this is Colnago’s first real attempt at an aero-focused bike. In wind tunnel tests, they have found it to save 20 watts over the C60 at 50km/h. But Colnago understands that in order to get to the point where you can ride the bike fast enough for those 20 watt savings to kick in, you are going to have to ride your bike, a lot. With that in mind, they have also been certain not to sacrifice long distance comfort for that aero advantage. After all, what’s the point of going faster if you hate to ride it? To make the ride as smooth as possible, Colnago designed its headset with replaceable carbon composite cups that isolate the fork from the frame using a special polymer. Meanwhile, the fork is made from a monocoque carbon and not only has been shaped to be extremely aerodynamic, but also has a carbon steerer tube that has a special layup to allow it to flex a little to provide that extra cushioning that your hands will appreciate after long days in the saddle. The rake has also been shaped to ensure that that crisp, responsive handling that represents one of the defining traits that Colnago will not change.

Recognizing that the front end of the bike is the first line of defense against causing too much drag, the head tube has also received a special new shape with an hourglass type of profile that has already been used on their time trial machine. Similarly, the seatpost has been smoothly integrated with the seat tube, and received a wind-tunnel-test aero shape as well. And the carbon layup of the tubing allows for a certain amount of vertical compliance that will feel unusually plush for an aero bike. The beautifully designed internal cable routing adds to the clean look and the aero efficiency of the frame. The routing also makes sure that the cables have as straight a shot as possible, ensuring excellent performance in shifting and braking no matter which groupset you go with. The frame is compatible with both mechanical and electronic groups, and direct mount brakes.

The Concept bike uses the same bottom bracket design as the C60 with a press fit BB which also incorporates their own ThreadFit82 that uses screw-in alloy cups, the increased width of the bottom bracket adds to the overall rigidity of the frame. Aside from eliminating the chance of creaking that press fit bottom brackets often cause, it makes the whole arrangement extremely easy to maintain and clean. The frame can easily accommodate tires up to 28mm wide, enhancing the comfort of the ride and keeping up with modern tastes and preferences.

With a geometry very similar to the C60, you can count on having the same crisp, aggressive ride that will help you weave through the pack while you set yourself up for the winning attack. Available in eight sizes, the Colnago Concept aerodynamic bike has been developed to offer a top quality performance while still being comfortable enough to want to spend the hours in the saddle we need to in order to improve our Strava PRs.
