2019 Colnago C64

There are many things to love about Colnago, but high on our list is just how true they are to their own convictions about what makes a Colnago a Colnago. Fashions come and go, but Colnago has remained at the top of the list for desirable, incredible bikes. And the new Colnago C64 will be a proud addition to that catalogue of exceptional bikes.

Ernesto Colnago founded his company in 1954, so the C64 has been named in honor of the company’s 64 years of existence. And no wonder; that is an impressively long time to have been making drool-worthy bikes. Over two years in development, the C64 quickly moves to the head of the class with a mix of legacy improvements and modern flourishes. Even if you are not hugely familiar with Colnago, you’ll probably know that they have doggedly stuck with their lugged frame designs even as much of the industry has moved toward monocoque carbon frames.

The C64 indeed does use a lugged design, but they have rethought their methods and put a whole new spin on the notion of lugs and tubes. Most impressively, they have taken the seat tube and seat tube lug to make one continuous piece. Considering they offer the C64 in 14 different sizes, that is quite a commitment. But the seat tube, seatpost, seatstay interface often acts as the achilles heel of many frames, weakening the rigidity and noodling out the feel. But with this weight saving semi-lugged solution for the C64, you can count on all your energy going into the pedals and not washed out through a mushy frame feel. And the integrated seat clamp hidden on the underside of the top tube will hold your seatpost securely, so no worries about seatpost creep slipping you out of your perfect seat position.

For the bottom bracket, Colnago uses with their ThreadFit82.5, which neatly squares the circle regarding press fit width and rigidity with threaded durability. Considerably more exciting is the fact that Colnago has partnered with Ceramic Speed to create a threaded, wider bottom bracket, with best in-class bearings. This will be an available optional at an extra cost. They have also made three different bottom bracket options for Campagnolo, Shimano and SRAM groupsets. And on the practical side, the BB lug has had the cable guide molded into its shape, doing away with the necessity of the fickle and easily damaged plastic bolted on cable guide. Now you or your mechanic won’t ever be tempted to route the cables over the top of that fiddly plastic bit again.

Though Colnago has not approached the design of the C64 with the idea of shaving it down to be aero within an inch of its life, there are several design touches that give it a decided aero advantage over it C60 brother. The down tube has been reshaped to be narrower on the bottom side, well positioning it to cut through the wind, while the recessed bottle cage also protects that notoriously turbulent area protection from disrupting the airflow. Of course, the down tube is still the spine of the setup with a torsional stiffness that will channel all your power to the road. But what we all love about riding a Colnago is how smoothly it handles. A lot of the credit must go to the fork as well as the headtube interface. The C64’s fork has received a major redesign with an external rib shape to mix comfort with rigidity, while the head tube has reduced weight while increasing stiffness.

Compatible with mechanical and electric groupsets, the Colnago C64 can be built up to the Italian dream machine you have always wanted. Whether you are racing it over European cols or training for your local crit series, the C64 will be that rare super bike that is performance oriented, but still comfy like Sunday morning.
