2019 Colnago C64 Disc

Just because Colnago is not into following fashion trends doesn’t mean they will resist a good idea when they see it. And so that’s why there was never any question when developing the C64 whether there would be a disc version. The Colnago C64 Disc will give you the Italian tradition and pedigree while still recognizing that a lot of us really value having brakes that will stop in all conditions.

Though the meat of the disc version is similar to the rim brake C64, there are a couple of key areas that needed addressing. The rear triangle for the C64 was given a neat little nudge with the rear dropouts being a one-piece construction on both versions, enhancing the stiffness and paradoxically the vertical compliance as well. But then the disc brake version receives the added benefit of the 12mm through axles to stiffen up the rear end. The C64 in both versions focuses on increased tire clearance as well, which is 28mm on the rim brake version due entirely to the limits of the actual rim brake, which means that Colnago says that there’s plenty more room on the disc version of the bike for wide road tires. And frankly, that’s really where you are going to find the most comfort factor.

Similarly, the C64 Disc’s fork has had to receive a bit of extra love in the design process. The internal and external ribbed structure of the material is still used, while the steerer tube has been shaped to accommodate routing the brake housing from the stem so everything can stay looking neat and make assembly easier. The threaded 12mm through axle is another point Colnago updated in relation to the C60, which makes the setup lighter and stronger.

The rest of the frame follows very closely to the rim brake version with a lug design that keeps things stiff while shedding a considerable amount of weight compared to the C60 Disc. Perhaps our favorite part of this bike is the bottom bracket, where Colnago sticks with their ThreadFit82.5, which neatly uses the best of both worlds: the press fit rigid width and threaded durability. Perhaps most exciting is the fact that Colnago has partnered with Ceramic Speed to create their threaded, wider bottom bracket, with best in-class bearings. This will be an available option at an extra cost. They have also made three different bottom bracket options for Campagnolo, Shimano and SRAM groupsets. And on the practical side, the BB lug has had the cable guide molded into its shape, doing away with the necessity of the fickle and easily damaged plastic bolted on cable guide. Now you or your mechanic won’t ever be tempted to route the cables over the top of that fiddly plastic bit again.

Continuing with the lugged theme, they have rethought their methods and put a whole new spin on the notion of lugs and tubes for the C64. Most impressively, they have taken the seat tube and seat tube lug one continuous piece. Considering they offer the C64 in 14 different sizes, that is quite a commitment. But the seat tube, seatpost, seatstay interface often acts as the achilles heel of many of frame, weakening the rigidity and noodling out the feel. But with this weight saving semi-lugged solution for the C64, you can count on all your energy going into the pedals and not washed out through a mush frame feel. And the integrated seat clamp hidden on the underside of the top tube will hold your seatpost securely.

Overall, the Colnago C64 Disc is a bike that will be comfortable enough to take on long distance adventures and light enough to use as your racing machine. Compatible with mechanical and electric groupsets, the C64 Disc will be the type of bike that you will start dreaming about taking over the longest alpine climbs if only so you can confidently enjoy the epic descents.
