2017 Colnago C60
Even if the Colnago C60 didn’t ride like a dream, it would still be the bike that would most occupy our fantasies. If the long history of excellence wasn’t enough, then we would naturally have to be won over with just how amazing the bike looks and the fact that it is constructed entirely in Italy. This is the epitome of Italian elegance and design.
The C60 takes the classic full carbon tube and lug design that they have been using for many years and gives it a modern upgrade. Using the star-shaped tubes and lugs of earlier iterations, they have increased the diameter of the tubes while requiring thinner walls, so the whole frame becomes stronger and lighter. This has been made possible by the redesign of the bottom bracket: the star-shaped tubing inserts provide more stiffness and a better distribution of stress forces. And since Colnago has moved to a press fit BB designed to incorporate their own ThreadFit82 that uses screw-in alloy cups, the increased width of the bottom bracket adds to the overall rigidity of the frame. The chainstays have also received some attention from the Colnago designers, since they have been given internal ribs in the carbon layup to increase lateral stiffness without adding weight. Of course rigidity without comfort is not a great recipe for a fun bike, and so Colnago has added in a touch of vertical compliance by tapering the chainstay tube as it moves towards the dropouts, thereby allowing for a certain amount of springiness at that juncture to help reduce the road vibrations that you’ll be apt to feel. The mono-seatstay also work with the shape of the chainstays to help absorb vibrations while keeping the rear triangle stiff and responsive. Holding the whole thing together, the CNC-machined one-piece alloy rear dropouts provide exceptional lateral stiffness and weigh less than many carbon dropouts. The derailleur hanger is replaceable and has been designed to be the break point in case of a crash, to save your dropouts from being damaged. The internal cable routing keeps everything looking nice and clean, and the frame is set up to accommodate both electric and mechanical groupsets. And the bottom bracket can accept any BB86 compatible crank from Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo and FSA.
Though you may wonder why Colnago continues to buck the monocoque trend with their carbon-lugged frames, one serious advantage you get with the lugged design is the amazing number of size options the C60 offers. Most carbon frame manufacturers can only afford maybe six molds for their frame sizes, whereas Colnago has nine sloping frame sizes and five traditional non-sloping frame sizes, not to mention the option for customized sizing.
The Colnago C60 is a frame that does not focus on one attribute over another – it’s not more aero than it is comfortable – but rather has been developed to offer the best overall ride quality possible. You’ll feel it on the descents as much as you will on the climbs and even on windy flats: this is a bike that will just keep giving you its best and making all your rides epically fun.
