2017 Colnago C60 Disc

Are you the type to watch Paris-Roubaix, squinting at the TV screen trying to decide what new tech the pros are racing for the toughest one day race in the world? Or does it not matter to you, and you just want to have the best equipment for the sort of terrain you ride? Either way, there is a strong case to be made for the Colnago C60 Disc.

Just because Colnago has the reputation for being a traditional bike brand, that doesn’t mean they don’t embrace innovation when there’s a point. That’s why the C60, Colnago’s flagship bike, has been given the disc brake treatment: just because the pros are dilly-dallying about whether they will or will not race with discs, you need not be bound by any outmoded notions. If you are worried about added weight, you shouldn’t since the C60 Disc has been put on a diet compared to the C59 Disc, which means you will have a new co-molded post mount threaded insert on the C60 Disc as well as new dropouts that save up to 140 grams compared to the C59 Disc. And compared to the C60 without discs, it is barely 100 grams heavier. That’s less than what an iPhone 7 weighs. Leave your phone at home, and you’ll be about 40 grams ahead. Aside from that, with the C60 Disc you’ll get the same classic, lugged design language that you must love about Colnago or you wouldn’t be considering one. The star-shaped tubes of lore have been bulked up to accommodate the massively stiff bottom bracket, though the larger diameter of the tubes means that the walls can be made thinner, reducing weight. The increased size of the bottom bracket means that Colnago can use their clever ThreadFit82 that utilizes screw-in alloy cups within a press fit BB design.

Moving out from the oversized bottom bracket, the specially ribbed chainstays work together with the forged CNC one piece rear dropouts to increase lateral stiffness without adding weight. But that’s not the end to the magic, since Colnago has added in a touch of vertical compliance by tapering the chainstay tube as it moves towards the dropouts, thereby allowing for a certain amount of springiness at that juncture to help reduce the road vibrations that you’d otherwise be apt to feel. The mono-seatstay also works with the shape of the chainstays to help absorb vibrations while keeping the rear triangle stiff and responsive. The derailleur hanger is replaceable and has been designed to be the break point in case of a crash, to save your dropouts from being damaged. Clever cable routing options are available for interchangeable mechanical/electronic systems, as well as dedicated electronic groupsets. And the bottom bracket can accept any BB86 compatible crank from Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo and FSA.

Since the C60 Disc does stick with the lugged method of building, that means there is an almost unlimited number of size options from sloping to standard to high. All that’s left is to build it up with some super sweet components, a slick pair of medium-deep dish disc brake wheels, for instance, and hit the road.

The Colnago C60 Disc is the type of bike that you will find a joy to ride even when your legs are terrible and there’s a stiff headwind. It’ll be fun in the rain. It’ll be fun to look at parked in your hallway. It’ll be part of what defines you as a cyclist.
