2020 Colnago Arabesque
Though the Colnago Arabesque looks beautiful enough to hang on a wall as artwork, it really is made to be ridden. To save it for good would be causing yourself to miss out on a lot of fun. Naming it Arabesque is also apt since the term refers to artistic, usually music or architectural, manifestations of Nature’s beauty.
Not only is this a gorgeous bike, it’s pretty rare. Made using a recently discovered cache of 80s-era Arabesque lugs, this modern Arabesque has all the steel goodness that makes us old-timers go weak in the knees when we think about the unrivalled workmanship and history that goes into making the Arabesque so much more than just an homage to bike builders of old. But if you are the type who likes the looks of old cars, but hate the way they drive, you won’t have to worry about that here since Colnago has had the practical foresight to make the Arabesque frame compatible both with modern and traditional groupsets, traditional being the ones that come with downtube shifters. With steel tubes that hint at the star-shape that would become the signature of Colnago frames, the real meat of this frame comes in the elaborately designed lugs, all jugendstil-ish filigree and finery.
Assuming you will be looking to build this up and not just hang it on your office wall, the full steel frame and fork comes with the one inch threadless headset included. The bottom bracket is a classic 70mm Italian threaded so you can stick any standard 24mm external type crank on this baby. The external cable routing flies in the face of modern preferences, but looks oh-so pro in an Eddy Merckx or Jacques Anquetil type of way. The braze-on front derailleur mount will work with bottom pull derailleurs. It should be needless to say this is a rim brake only bike, and fits standard 700c wheels. The seatpost is not included, but will fit any 27.2mm post, so you can have a seriously retro looking setup.
Available in four colors and an astounding 17 sizes from 49cm to 65cm in 1 cm increments, this bike is just begging to have a super sweet build so you can enjoy imagining yourself among the grainy riders from A Sunday in Hell. Colnago claims that they are the only company with the skill to produce a bike like the Arabesque, and who are we to argue? Glory in a classic steel ride with the Colnago Arabesque.
