If you were already quietly lusting over the RB1K, you’ll be even more excited by this 2018 update, since small but important tweaks have been made, reducing the frame’s weight, increasing its aerodynamics and improving its overall compatibility with different rider types.
The previous RB1K looked fast, but always carried just that extra bit of weight that would have put off those folks who have a lot of climbing in their regular rides. The updated edition moves the bike an inch or two away from being the pure sprinter’s machine to becoming a lot more oriented towards the type of bike that can withstand the megawatts a Cipo-style sprinter can pile on, but also light enough to tackle a Haute Route ride while also offering enough clearance for 28mm tires for increased comfort. Though for the frame they use the same Torayca’s T1000.M46J carbon fiber, which offer among the highest tensile and compression strength of any Toray’s carbon options, they have still managed to layer it in a way that whacks off about 120g compared to the previous model, while increasing the rigidity by 20%. The monocoque construction ensures that all weak points have been eliminated and the BB386EVO bottom bracket makes no bones about providing a super stiff platform for your race-winning mountain attacks or transferring your devastating sprint finish wattage.
If you are wondering just where the updates have been made, just take a closer look at the frame. For one thing, they seem to have taken the aero design a touch more seriously. The intersection of the top of the fork, down tube and bottom of the head tube is significantly neater than the earlier editions. This not only smooths out the airflow in that very important interface, but helps the frame look much more elegant. Similarly, they have opted to eschew the integrated seatpost for the much more practical and no less aero seatpost with a hidden seat clamp. They’ve also designed a new raised headset with an aero cover so you can opt for a more comfortable, less aggressive setup. The 1 1/2" to 1 1/4” tapered head tube has also been beefed up and the fork retains its shallow rake to ensure rigid, tight handling. Choose your lines carefully because this bike will slice like a knife edge.
The geometry has retained its aggressiveness, ensuring that this will be your go-to bike for those events you really want to put the hammer down and push your competition to the limit. With a long reach, a low stack and a steep seat tube angle, you’ll start to feel closer to a TT position than a road bike. This is not necessarily the bike you want to buy if you are an endurance-oriented cyclist who likes a long, slow burn of a ride. But if you are a keen crit racer, or have a good selection of weekend stage races throughout the year, you could hardly find a more responsive, more intimidating bike for race day. Since the frame can accommodate electric and mechanical groupsets, you’ll be able to go wild kitting out the RB1K with the type of components that will only enhance the performance and the sexy factor.
This is not the sort of bike you’ll be looking at if you are interested in bike packing across Alaska or interested in a versatile commuting bike to take out on weekends. But if you are looking to add a serious racing bike to your collection with an emphasis on performance and style, then the Cipollini RB1K will be an ideal option with authentic Italian flair.
