2018 Cipollini MCM
It used to be that if you wanted a carbon framed bike, you’d have to make do with a limited number of stock sizes. With a growing expertise in what is possible working with carbon, that is no longer the case and you can treat yourself to a Cipollini MCM which is available in a customizable version as well as in seven stock sizes.
Anyone considering a Cipollini almost certainly loves a stiff, responsive feel where you really have a direct communication with the road; not dissimilar from a Ferrari or other Italian supercar where you have to prefer the immediate response to the road over a soft, sofa-like ride. With the huge K1 T800 carbon tubes and the conical, tapered headtube, the MCM is a beast fit best for those riders who aspire to be like Mario. Powerful, out of the saddle attacks will just feel so right on this rig. They say that MCM actually stands for “Mario Cipollini Custom Made”, and we can certainly forgive them for missing that middle C since the name says everything about the ride.
If you are wondering how they can customize carbon in the first place, it’s all in the layup. Most carbon frames that claim to be monocoque aren’t really entirely monocoque. Usually the front triangle will be molded as one piece, and then the stays added later, either with a sticky emulsion or carbon wrapping. Well, this carbon wrapping method has been expanded to include the front triangle in the MCM, which means you can get measured for your frame size, send the measurements to Cipollini in Italy, where they will make the frame to order. The smallest possible size is a 44cm while the largest is 63, which should just about cover everybody.
Looking at the tube sizes, it’ll be no surprise this is a beast in the sprints. With the Press Fit 41 x 86.5mm bottom bracket allowing for the beefy connecting tubes, it looks like it can accelerate all alone. And the seatpost-seat tube interaction has also been cleverly designed with a ghost clamp on a height adjustable rail to ensure that you can dial in your fit, and not worry about squeaking or worse, slipping seatposts. It is designed to accommodate mechanical and electric groupsets and internally routed cables. Though this is the rim brake setup, it can handle up to 28mm tires, which will help keep this aggressive riding bike still feeling comfortable for the long haul.
If you order the Cipollini MCM custom, you can of course choose your geometry to make it as aggressive or laid back as you like, though the tube shapes are begging for a race ready aggressive build, which is certainly what you’ll get in the stock sizes. Available in four paint schemes that range from understated to flashy, the MCM is the type of racing bike that will motivate you to ride harder so that you can live up to its potential.
