2018 Cipollini BOND
The Cipollini Bond, not unlike the NK1K and the RB1K, is a bike for putting the hammer down. It’s not hard to tell that all these bikes were inspired by a man who numbers among one of the best sprinters ever. But if you are inclined to dismiss each as a relative copy of the other, don’t. That would be a great mistake. Rather, think of them as if they are super cars. A Porsche, a Lambo, and a Ferrari are all fast, ostentatious cars, but, like the Cipollini road line, they each have their own personality, handling, ride feel, etc. And most importantly, they are all a ton of fun.
The Bond differs from other Cipollini bike frames in that the monocoque front triangle is joined, or bonded, to the chainstays which are constructed as individual pieces. If you look closely at the bottom bracket area, you will see that it is immense and that it looks rather like an elegant solution which includes a rear axle assembly called the Atomlink. The BB386EVO has been fitted into the massive bottom bracket structure and plays a huge role in the level of responsive power transfer you will feel as soon as you snap up out of the saddle attacking a climb. Cipollini liked this solution so much, they took out an original patent for it. For the carbon used in the frame, they have turned to T700 E UTS. You can feel confident with its strength since it is among the lightest carbons in Toray’s line up with a high UTS or Ultimate Tensile Strength that will account for the responsiveness of the ride. The fact that the frame is lovingly handcrafted in Italy by experts working with carbon fiber should also fill you with the confidence that you will want to carry over to that next time you want to bomb down your favorite local descent.
The frame has been designed not only to be responsive, but also absorb road chatter with things like fashionably thin wishbone seatstays to introduce a bit of compliance. Make no mistake, this is a racer’s geometry with the classic Italian lay-across-your-frame reach. The aero bladed fork has been flared using the same carbon material used on the rest of the frame so that handling is precise while the tapered steerer tube offers that modicum of compliance to keeps the front end comfortable. All cable routing is internal and compatible with mechanical and electronic groupsets, so the world’s your oyster as far as classy builds you can give this baby. The front derailleur is a braze on, and the aero seatpost is included. This is the rim brake version of the Bond, though Cipollini has had the foresight to develop a disc brake option as well.
Not surprisingly, this is a bike with a lot of personality. Hovering around the 1000 gram mark depending on which of the five sizes, the Cipollini Bond will be the type of bike that gives you the perfect level of road feedback so that you’ll be able to judge every corner with ease.
