2021 Cinelli King Zydeco
Since races like the Eroica in Tuscany can be at least partially credited for the explosion of the gravel sector of the bike industry these days, it is only appropriate that one of the most storied Italian bike brands has developed such a snappy gravel bike. The Cinelli King Zydeco will make you dream of hammering the white roads of Italy, as well as your own towpaths along the local streams.
Cinelli, being a road-oriented bike brand, has focused on keeping the King Zydeco as close to your road bike feel with the off road capabilities as possible. So the frame has an aggressive race geometry that will make you feel like you could stick some slicks on this baby at the weekend and jump into your local crit. With 700c wheels you can slap on some 42mm tires for a fully capable gravel experience, and then oh golly, once you get some 650b wheels mounted with 2.1 inch tires, you will feel like the fastest back-roads explorer without limits. If you are worried about how that change of wheel size will impact the fork rake, you don’t have to worry since Cinelli has designed to fork to have a flip chip at the dropouts so that you can change the rake to suit the different wheel sizes and keep the handling spot on.
You’ve also probably noticed that the King Zydeco has a dropped chainstay to accommodate the massive tire clearance. The carbon chainstays are also broad to help keep the rear end stiff and responsive while the seatstays have a lithe elegance to enhance the comfort factor. Interestingly, the top tube flows directly into the seatstays as a way to enhance the overall stiffness of the rear triangle. Though the geometry is quite aggressive for a gravel bike, the ride will remain comfy thanks to the high quality carbon as well as the layup that makes sure it’ll absorb the constant gravel chatter. No need to worry about buzzing arms and hands after a couple hours riding over the rough stuff. And since gravel is apt to ding your frame more easily than smooth tarmac, Cinelli designed an integrated protection plate for the downtube made from Kevlar. So you won’t have to worry about rock strikes pockmarking your gorgeous frame.
You’ll be able to order the King Zydeco as a frame to build up as you like, and it will be available in a variety of builds as well. The frame can accommodate either a 1X or 2X drivetrain, so you can make it the ultimate backpacking bike with a wide 1X range, or keep the cassette cluster tighter for those races that you’ll want to have gearing more like a road bike. The 86.5 press fit bottom bracket means that you can fit just about any crank to the frame. It is available in four sizes and a classically Italian eye-catching color.
No matter what kind of gravel adventures you have envisioned for yourself, the Cinelli King Zydeco has what it takes to keep up with your dreams.
