2018 Cinelli Hobootleg Bike
There are normal adventure bikes and then there is the Cinelli Hobootleg. This is a steel framed, adventure bike that has been developed and refined in extreme races like the Tour d’Afrique, which is the original and probably most intense transcontinental bicycle event. Starting in Cairo and ending in Cape Town, it is a race that requires the toughest, most reliable bike and components.
That’s not to say that you will only find this bike useful if you have the ambition to do a race like that, but it does illustrate just how durable this bike will be. But it will also be seriously great to ride since Cinelli has developed it to be comfortable without losing that snap that makes riding a road bike so much fun. If the name is tripping you up, it’s just a merging of its full name “Hobo Bootleg”, taking inspiration from those early 20th century Americans who would ride the rails across the country, either looking for work or adventure. They take this conceit so far as to have the handlebars spec’d with tape that has been decorated with the sign language of American hobos from back in the day.
But there is more beauty in this bike than just its appearance. It uses Columbus Cromor tubing to ensure incredible strength, and they have given a special anti-corrosion treatment internally and externally, so you won’t have to worry about nasty wet weather eventually undermining the steel tubes. Meanwhile, the Shimano components will match the frame’s durability with ease. This is a setup for long adventures that offer an unlimited number of challenges, so you will quickly understand the gearing choices come with an 11-34 cassette, and a triple up front with 26-36-48 rings, a rare beast these days. Something else this bike has that you rarely see any more are bar-end shifters. Cinelli has chosen to use these because they are less prone to damage when you happen to biff it on a sandy descent, for instance. This is a bike made for adventurers after all.
The Tubus bike racks at the front and back will ensure you can take a full selection of kit for those multi-day or even multi-week treks. Just keep in mind when packing, the max load for the front is 18kg, and 30kg for the rear. Of course, you probably won’t want to pedal with much more additional weight than that, so light packing is always an advantage. External cable routing has also been used throughout so that any on the road adjustments can be done with ease. Front and rear fenders are also included if you will be spending an extended period of time in rainy climes, and makes this also the ideal commuter for those times you can’t be off adventuring. With the fenders, you can fit tires up to 40mm wide, and even up to 42mm if you roll without the fenders.
The Cinelli Hobootleg comes in six sizes from XS to XL and in the Railway color that also reflects the wandering nature behind the inspiration for this bike.
