2020 Bianchi Specialissima
Several years ago, we remember seeing an ad for a bike brand – we forget which one now – that said a real cyclist owns a car, but is still paying off a bike. Yup, color us guilty of that one. And what better bike to owe payments on still than the gorgeous Bianchi Specialissima? As an Italian lightweight climbing machine, the Specialissima will thrill you with its handling and wow you with his effortless acceleration.
The Bianchi Specialissima is unabashedly a racing bike. And not only a racing bike, but a bike for serious climbers. Lightweight and bravely rim brake specific, the Specialissima has been designed to be a treasure trove of inspiration and acceleration for anyone who likes to climb hard out of the saddle. It is just so fast going uphill that you will think you have added a few mini rockets. With the super lightweight frame weighing around 780g in a size 55, you’ll easily be able to build this baby to be under the 6.8kg UCI weight limit. Since most of us are not racing in the WorldTour, that means that we can get all the benefits of the ultra-light design, unlike the pros who will have to have bike chains dropped into the seat tube to keep the weight above the limit.
Though lightweight on this level often in the past has translated into jittery and even wiggly handling, that is not something you’ll need to fear with the Specialissima. The designers have been certain to use the type of carbon and layering techniques that will increase stiffness and rigidity without adding extra weight. They want this bike to be the type of frame that a mega-powerful pro can ride and not feel the slightest wobble in acceleration. And if someone on the leg-strength level of a Wout Van Aert can roll with this, think of what the rest of us can enjoy. The race-oriented aggressive geometry also does not disappoint if you are looking to rail the descents feeling totally in control.
And just because this is a high performance machine, designed to suit the skinny asses you’ll find in the pro ranks, that doesn’t mean that it is bone-shaking uncomfortable, meant only for the toughest riders. On the contrary, Bianchi uses a special material called Countervail. It is a special carbon material with a unique fiber architecture and viscoelastic resin. This viscoelastic resin helps absorb road vibrations which will not only reduce fatigue, but improve the road feel and handling of the bike. The tapered 1.1/8” to 1.4” headtube will also add to your feeling of solidity and rigidity on the front end, giving it that ideal point and shoot accuracy when descending or diving into a crit race corner. And though this is not a bike overly focused on going crazy aero, the hourglass shape of the head tube certainly improves the aerodynamics of that leading edge. The fork has also received a great deal of attention, being made from cull carbon with the Countervail material to keep it durable, stiff and compliant at the same time. And at 340 grams, it keeps the weight low as well while guaranteeing responsive handling.
The Press Fit 86.5 bottom bracket ensures smooth functionality with a wide choice of crank compatibility, while allowing Bianchi to beef up and strengthen that essential section of the bike. It is available in seven sizes from 47 to 61cm, and comes in four stock colors, though through the Bianchi Tavolozza customization program, you can design your own frame color mix.
This is a bike that they have been very careful to balance the rigidity and durability requirements with the desire to keep it as light as possible. And that dual accomplishment will ensure that the Bianchi Specialissima will be a joy to ride for many years ahead.
