2019 Bianchi L'Eroica
There are some things that are just too beautiful for you to question how practical. And often, let’s be honest, bikes fall under that category. There’s so much love and emotion tied up in our favorite bikes that we just gotta have them. These days, many people might question how reasonable buying a new classic lugged steel frame with downtube shifters may be, but when you see just how beautiful the Bianchi L'Eroica is in real life, there will be no doubt in your mind this is something you have to have.
There are actually quite a few brands cashing in on the legacy market with some flash looking steel bikes, but most often these are bikes that are intended for modern groupsets, from STI shifting tech on down. But Bianchi has made this bike for the purists, the folks who think Merino wool is king, who dream about riding the white gravel roads or Strade Bianche in Italy. Hell, this is exactly the bike you need to buy in order to take part in that storied race. Not the one that morphed into the professional’s event, but the one that still takes place as a mass Gran Fondo where wool is the order of the day, and there won’t be a Di2 groupset in sight.
The Bianchi L'Eroica is made from Columbus Zona lugged steel tubing. If you are unfamiliar with Zona tubing, it is a double butted reinforced steel tubing that is used for top of the line steel bikes these days because it offers a modern low weight while remaining strong and durable. It has been designed and constructed in Italy, with a matching lugged steel fork, with some natty chroming of the stays and fork to add that inestimable amount of Italian class. The lugged 1” head tube definitely looks the part. And the Italian threaded bottom bracket is de rigueur, as is the Celeste Bianchi color.
Available in seven sizes from 50 through 63cm, the Bianchi L'Eroica is far from a relic, but rather one of the most beautiful classic steel bikes available. It’s where the saying “steel is real” will really hit home, especially if you have spent the past ten years or more riding carbon. This is a bike for the ages.
