2019 Basso Astra
If you are looking to buy a monocoque carbon racing bike, but don’t have a WorldTour budget, the Basso Astra will be a fantastic option to consider. Made with the same care and attention to detail as the top of the line Diamante, the Astra uses slightly less expensive carbon to save on money without compromising on quality.
As with all Basso bikes, the great appeal of the Astra will start with just how amazingly well it handles. With race geometry that manages to avoid being uncomfortably aggressive, it will encourage you to take the long way home. Basso makes their frames in Italy so they know a thing or two about how best to place the carbon when layering the frame. The tube shapes have been chosen to maximize rigidity to make it positively snap when you are pushing the pace out of the saddle. They have also been sculpted to offer great aero advantage.
Using 3K Torayca High Modulus Carbon Fiber in T700-MR60 gives the frame a level of compliance that will help absorb those fatiguing road vibrations. The fact that the bottom bracket shell has been made from a single molding means that they have been able to produce it to be seriously stiff and resistant to torsional forces even at extreme loads. It also means that the minimum of material has needed to be used, keeping the weight low.
Up front, they keep the handling tight and appearance slick with their own stem design that uses headset spacers to get exactly the stack setting you want while keeping the steering tight and responsive. The tapered head tube also adds to the overall beauty and reliability of the handling with a monocoque fork to help absorb vibration and rail control.
This is the rim brake version of the Basso Astra, though it is also available in a disc brake version. It can work with electronic and mechanical groupsets, and comes in six sizes. And with seven color options from which to choose, you can certainly have one of the more unusual bikes on your next group ride.
