2021 Argon 18 Krypton Pro

If you sometimes wonder what’s the whole point of bike brands sponsoring pro teams, you should jump on an Argon 18 Krypton Pro to see how some pro demands for comfort and performance can help create a smooth-riding, long distance bike that can still hammer it in your local crit series.

Even though most of us aren’t pros, and have no ambitions to become pros, we all like to have bikes that are comfortable and fun to ride. The fun factor generally comes when it handles well in all situations, and encourages us to ride just that little bit harder. Whether it’s urging us to get out of the saddle up a tough climb, or encouraging us to touch the brakes a little later on our favorite descent, having a bike like the Krypton Pro just amps up the enjoyment of every ride. The pro connection comes in because Argon 18 has been a bike sponsor to the Astana team for several years, and took on board rider feedback for what they need from a bike when racing the cobbled classics like Paris-Roubaix. Considering how difficult a race that is, you might think that their needs would differ greatly from yours. But then again, what a race like Paris-Roubaix demands is a durable bike that offers a comfortable ride and a definite snappy kick. But that doesn’t sound too different from what we all want our road bikes to offer.

Essential to getting the mixture right, the carbon layup is where a brand can really make a difference and distinguish itself. Argon 18 certainly manages to do that with the Krypton Pro. Though the frame in size medium only weighs 870 grams, it still has the durability to handle the roughest race on the calendar. The key is precisely placing the material so that there is enough where needed, and no excess that will just add unnecessary weight. And this process isn’t just guesswork. They have actually studied endurance-specific load cases to be able to optimize the layup according to what areas will require enhanced vibration dampening and what areas will be undergoing power transmission stresses. Not only will this work well for the pros racing to Roubaix, but it will help you on all your own two-wheeled adventures, especially if you are tackling a Gran Fondo or Haute Route.

These days, integrated cable routing is all the rage, and little wonder when you see the numbers of how much drag you can save by tucking your cables neatly into the bars and stem. Such a different from the old STI days of the cables exiting the top of the hoods and winding around to the different corners of the bike. Argon 18 have used a proprietary steerer to work with the integration of the cockpit to ensure the cables are efficiently routed and entirely hidden. Though most mechanics groan when they hear that, this design has been made to be user friendly for maintenance and travel disassembling. The arrangement also allows for a 2cm adjustment range of stack and reach without having to bleed the brakes. Further tailoring towards a perfect fit for all riders is also made possible by the variety of stem lengths available, from 70 to 120mm, as well as the Argon 3D+ system which extends the headtube with three positioning options. Eschewing traditional spacers, they say this increases rigidity by 5% at 15mm and 11% at 30mm.

The Argon 18 Krypton Pro has been optimized for electronic shifting, but can accommodate mechanical groupsets as well. It is an excellent bike for any rider who likes to have comfort and performance combined in one package. With the Krypton Pro, you’ll be able to follow your adventure instincts while accumulating a ton of PRs along the way.
