2021 Argon 18 Krypton CS SRAM Rival 22 Bike

The Argon 18 Krypton CS is the Canadian company’s answer to the needs of all those riders who are most interested in challenging themselves over long distances. It forms the crux of their endurance bike offerings and the design takes into consideration the types of rigors cycling long distances will entail.

The two essential attributes that make an endurance bike a success are the geometry and the compliance. Every bike company knows this, and everyone has their own answers about how to get it done. Argon 18 is perhaps more successful than other companies in their endeavors because in addition to their endurance-specific geometry, they have taken the trouble to incorporate their 3D Plus System into the Krypton CS. It allows you to adjust the front end stack according to your needs – 0mm if you rather like a steeper drop to the bars, 15mm if you like to stay fairly low, but want to give your back a break, and a whopping 30mm if you really do like the added comfort a higher stack can offer you, especially if your goal is to heap on the miles you accumulate over a summer. But this system does not just raise the stack; it raises the stack without compromising the stiffness of the front end, which enhances the handling. And it also looks quick slick, merging with the shape of the top tube seamlessly.

A good amount of vertical compliance is inevitably on the other side of the endurance coin. That is a phrase that gets tossed around a lot, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is an essential part of designing a great bike. Even on a purebred racing bike you don’t want to be rattled to death by the road chatter reverberating up the frame. It takes on even more importance when we’re talking about a bike that is designed to be ridden long distances in greater comfort. With that in mind, Argon 18 has developed what they call their Topological Compliance System. Focusing on the fork as well as the frame, it is a concept that incorporates a level of springiness where it will do the most good, like the fork legs and the seatstays, without compromising how well the frame responds to your pedaling power. The TDS-C Monocoque seatpost has also been designed to help keep the compliance level comfy at your backend, while remaining firm and supportive. Most of the magic might be hard to see with the naked eye, though you can understand a little of what they are doing by looking at the fork design, with its shape to enhance vibration absorption and handling control.

The fork is also evidence of how Argon 18 has not ignored the importance of aerodynamics in the design. Though now their pure aero bike, the Krypton CS has been aero optimized to enhance how well you cut through the wind, which is a big deal on longer trips even if you are not racing anyone but yourself. And it has been designed around flat mount disc brakes so that you will always have the stopping power you want, even in rainy conditions. There may still be some debate about whether disc brakes are needed in the pro peloton, but for us recreational cyclists, there can be little doubt that they are a huge help especially when weather and road conditions deteriorate. The Krypton CS can also accommodate either 140 or 160mm rotors, so you can really decide just how burly you want your stopping power to be. Another advantage of the disc brakes is that you can start to stick on some seriously wide road tires, which frankly is where the greater portion of your perceived comfort will really come from. The Krypton CS supports up to 32mm tires, which has become the endurance width of choice since they aren’t overly heavy and provide oodles of comfort.
