2019 Alchemy Skylla
Though every cyclist can appreciate the tech advancements being made within the cycling industry with carbon fiber, power meters, aerodynamics, etc., most of us are not all that interested in training to get a pro contract. Rather, it’s all about that age old goal of how much fun we can have on a bike. The Alchemy Skylla is a classic-looking steel frame that offers to open up your cycling world with its modern design flair and capabilities.
One reason Alchemy set up shop in Denver, Colorado, was so that they could attract cycling enthusiasts and technicians to come work and design for them. And the team have done themselves proud with their expert handling of steel tubes for the Skylla. They have used proprietary stainless steel tubes that have been pre-shaped to their standards and specifications. Most of us have heard that a tube’s shape and width in particular will have a big say in how the bike rides, but knowing exactly how to distribute that knowledge throughout the whole frame is where the craftsmanship comes in. Alchemy has designed the Skylla to be that elusive steel frame that can handle all road situations. Snappy and rigid enough to be effective climbing, compliant and durable enough to eat up dirt roads and gravel riding, and plush enough to be your go-to bike for long-distance adventures, the Skylla has managed to find that perfect balance of high performance and comfortable longevity.
So what you will enjoy is a very classic looking steel frame, with a traditionally shaped down tube and top tube to help keep the package nice and rigid, while the seat and chainstays have been carefully shaped to add that spring to the Skylla’s step, while not compromising on power transfer. Up front, you can enjoy the beautiful performance of the spec’d Enve fork that will help you feel comfy and in control careening down a mountain pass or powering over gravel roads. The 1 1/8” steerer tube is topped off by the included Cane Creek headset so you can count on that important interface remaining rock solid secure even when you take this baby over the rougher roads. Similarly, the 68mm English threaded bottom bracket will give you the sort of squeak-free reliable performance that will mean that you’ll seldom have to think about it, and any eventual maintenance will be easily done. External cable routing also keeps the Skylla looking traditional and easy to service.
Sticking with the classic bike story, the Alchemy Skylla is a rim brake frame that will come in five stock sizes and is available in 12 stock logo colors. Once you have the Skylla set up to your ideal specifications, you can start to look at the most detailed maps of your stomping grounds to find those roads less taken, and gain a new perspective on your adventures, whether they be close to home or in far flung regions.
