2021 3T Strada Team

If you are a pleasantly open-minded cyclist, you probably looked at the 3T Exploro and thought: ‘That’s a neat idea.’ But even the most non-judgmental of us are gonna have some pretty strong feelings about the 3T Strada. Some of us might have thought we passed our cycling merchandise “WTF!” moment back in the blissful early-2000s when we saw that a Lightweight-branded rear derailleur, non-electric, cost a cool $1200. Of course, there are many others of us who will say ‘Finally! Someone has designed exactly what I have been wanting!’

This is a road frame with strongly held beliefs. Aero, goes without saying. Wide tires, not too revolutionary. Disc brakes, thinning out the competition. 1X dedicated drivetrain. Wait, waahaaat? Choose two, and it’s your typical modern road bike. Choose three and you have a company consciously trying to push boundaries; but combining all four just seems nuts, until you ride it, that is. The 3T Strada is a bike that allows no compromises, no wishy-washy feelings. This is an aero road bike that essentially gives the big middle finger salute to all those supposed facts that we have learned from watching the Tour de France. In the 3T world, aero doesn’t necessarily look overly aero, and comfort isn’t defined by some gummy substance inlaid in a seatstay. Here we are relying on wide tire capabilities and real world aerodynamics where air turbulence looks a lot different than in a wind tunnel. So you will be able to easily fit 28mm tires, though 30mm will also work if you don’t have a lot of muddy gunk facing your ride. And the tube shapes for the Strada espouse this notion of working with the airflow in a way that air tunnel simulation just can’t approximate. So the tube shapes for the Strada vary between the Arcfoil tubes which have a pronounced curve to them in contrast to the flat, or cut-off kammtail of the Squaero seat tube.

Most of us who have been around cycling for a while but are not experts in fluid dynamics are pretty ready to accept whatever the manufacturers tell us about the shape of our tubes. But take away half of our gears…are you kidding? Of course, if you are also a keen mountain biker, the 1X idea might not only be appealing, but desired. The 3T Strada not only favors it, but demands a single ring setup in the front. A large part of their reasoning comes from the aero advantage you will get from not having a front derailleur, and the rest of the reasoning comes from the fact that with modern rear derailleur and rear cassette technology from companies like SRAM, a 2X setup is no longer necessary. Most 2X ratios have tons of overlap, and most of us stay in one front ring most of the time anyways. Why not get rid of the aero drag caused by the front derailleur, and make frequent use of 100% of our gear options? That’s the idea, and in reality it works amazingly well, especially if the closest you’ll ever come to a wind tunnel is riding past the one in San Diego.

The 3T Strada aero road bike with adventure at its core will either speak to you or make you question the sanity of anyone who wants it. And that’s okay. This is a fun bike made for the folks who want to get the most out of their endurance riding with a huge dash of adventure.
