2017, Quarq, DZERO CARBON Power Meter

The DZero Carbon Power Meter is named for one of the most groundbreaking experiments in the history of science, the DZero Experiment. This experiment detected subatomic particles moving at light speed. Quarq’s riders might not be moving at the speed of light, but they still benefit in a huge way from the data tracking and measuring made possible by Quarq’s DZERO Carbon Power Meter.

For 2017 the Quarq DZero power meter adds Bluetooth LE radio and continues ANT+. With Bluetooth LE you are now able to use smartphone apps like Strava, and Quarq’s own app, Qalvin BLE, which is where you get diagnostics and firmware updates. ANT+ gives you the flexibility to chose any ANT+ compatible head unit.

There are some really cool changes in this iteration of Quarq’s power meter. For one, there is an improved strain gauge arrangement and a new measurement circuit. This leads to improved accuracy over a wider range of conditions. Quarq calls this their 10K temperature compensation. 10,000 data points are used to eliminate the effect of temperature on power measurement. Also, a feature called Power Balance is used to see the ratio of power on the right side versus the left side. This helps test asymmetry and can even help with injury recovery.

The new DZero no longer needs to connect a magnet for cadence information, the DZero relies only on an accelerometer with AXCAD™ Accelerometer cadence. Besides being convenient, it’s also helpful if your bike makes it difficult to install a magnet.

A feature called OMNICAL means that when you swap out your chainrings the power meter measurement isn’t affected. As always Quarq offers industry leading accuracy at a range of +/- 1.5 percent.The power meter also comes with a CR2032 battery with over 300 hours of riding time. You can also rest easy knowing you have a two year warranty.

It might surprise you but this top of the line power meter is actually cheaper than the top of the line power meter it is replacing. The old Elsa R was $1299, the new DZero is $1079 So you get better performance at a lower price tag and we can all get behind that.
