Now with this redesign, Zipp manages to shed a remarkable 370 grams versus the older version of the 404 Firecrests. You haven’t misread that. They have taken it down from a claimed weight of 1820 grams for the set to 1450 grams. These improvements come thanks to the hookless rim design, meaning the side walls of the rim are flat, rather than curved to keep the tire on the rim. This design has several benefits since it allows for a more efficient resin distribution during production, which means lighter, stronger wheels.
Additionally, hookless rims enhance the aero advantage as well. The 23mm internal width and 25mm tubeless tires, the transition between the tire and the rim is nearly seamless and reduces drag. It’s an integral part of what Zipp called their TSE or Total System Efficiency. Not looking at one aspect over another, the TSE approach considered ways to mitigate wind resistance, gravity, rolling resistance, and vibration losses in order to make the rider as fast as possible.
