Introducing the Lightweight Fernweg EVO 63 for Disc Brakes

For any Lightweight fan who has been hoping to be able to go tubeless with their Lightweights, the Lightweight Fernweg EVO 63 for disc brakes answers that call. The EVO series redesign in fact will check a lot of boxes for modern road and tri setups that had been missing in previous Lightweight offerings.

The Fernweg EVO 63 come in as Lightweight’s idea for an all-around road and triathlon racing wheelset. With the 63mm deep rim profile and the impressively light 1695g for the set, these are wheels that can tackle everything from a hilly road race to a windy Kona-like tri parcours. Even if we are used to Lightweights being epically stiff and as a result super fast at accelerating, how well-balanced and stable these wheels are will feel like a revelation to anyone who has ridden an earlier generation of the Lightweights in heavily gusty wind situations. It’s not that older Lightweights were terrible in the wind, it’s just that since they are so light, and deep dished, they could feel a little twitchy on a descent when a semi-truck passes at speed. Gulp. Admittedly, that’s never a fun experience no matter the wheels you run.

Redefined Rim Design in the Fernweg EVO 63

But with the new modern approach to the rim design, Lightweight EVOs have moved away from the sharp v-shape of the rim and moved more in the rounded u-shape direction, in addition to making the rim width wider. With a 25mm external and 18.2mm internal rim width, they will work much more seamlessly with wider tubeless tires that most of us like to run. Though as with non-EVO Lightweights, they recommend using tires between 23 and 32mm wide. As disc brake specific, the Fernweg EVO 63 have the advantage of not needing to incorporate a brake track, while the carbon layup and integrated spoke design with 20 spokes front and back ensure the durability of the wheels and ability to withstand the increased braking forces. It also means that the weight limit for these wheels increases to 120kg or 265 pounds.

With the reduced rolling resistance that tubeless tires can afford, combined with the greater aero efficiency, the Lightweight Fernweg EVO 63 for disc brakes will quickly become not only race day but everyday wheels for you. You’ll never want to take them off.
