As a member of the fourth generation of SES or Smart Enve System wheels, the SES 2.3 distinguish themselves as being about the lightest wheels Enve has ever released. That’s saying something considering these are not tubulars but are tubeless only with a Wide Hookless Bead inner rim shape. Their lightweight belies the exceptional durability the SES 2.3 offer thanks to the choice of carbon and layering of fibers. The engineers can keep it so light without sacrificing durability by using continuously running fibers throughout the rim which strengthen the overall structure. That allows them to eliminate excess materials and resin. Their method of construction also allows them to orient the carbon fibers to provide zone-specific performance, similar to what you read happens with well-designed carbon frames.
Earlier iterations of the SES climbing wheel came in clincher and tubular options. Enve has decided that their hookless rim design for tubeless tires represents the ultimate in wheel options, since it allows them to combine the utility of the tubeless setup with a weight low enough that would make any tubular proud. A hookless rim design allows for machined metal tooling to establish a precise and consistent bead seat diameter, ensuring a safe and secure mating of rim and tire. The Wide Hookless Bead technology offers the additional advantage of reducing the chance of suffering punctures due to pinch flats.
Precision Engineering of the SES 2.3 Wheelset for Stiffness and Power Transfer
The heart and soul of the SES wheel category remains the Enve Premium Road Hub. Efficient, durable, and easily maintained, this hub design pulls together the whole package. You could say that Enve has taken all its learned about hubs from partnering with the best brands on the market, and designed their own hub that blows everyone out of the water. Starting from the hub shell geometry, the flange diameter, spacing and spoke hole lacing work together to ensure a stiff hub body with maximum power transfer.
Using cold-forged and machined 6061 aluminum keeps the body light as well as stiff while the custom made Premium Grade Stainless Steel Bearings and full stainless steel races guarantee long-lasting, non-corrosive performance even if you live in a particularly wet climate. Finally, the perfect bearing preload means that every wheel coming out of the factory has a tuned wave washer on the axle resulting in a long bearing life and maintenance free design.
With a 28mm for the front depth and 32mm for the rear depth, the Enve SES 2.3 wheels work excellently in cross winds while still offering an advantageous aero performance. Weighing 1197g per set, this is a pair of climbing wheels that will help you float up the climbs. Tubeless and disc brake only, with a minimum tire size of 25mm, these wheels prove the future is now.
